This is an excellent base from which to discover the cobbled streets, medieval buildings, delightful coffee shops, tea rooms and galleries, plus a plethora of antique shops and great restaurants. Rye was granted Cinque Port status in the 13th century, and during the 18th century was regarded as the smuggling capital of England. You can still see the old vaulted cellars where the smugglers’ contraband was stored. For centuries, Rye was an island with only one land connection at high tide to the mainland through the Landgate. Well known folk have lived in Rye over the years, including Henry James and E.F. Benson, who both dwelt at Lamb House (NT), albeit at different times! Mapp and Lucia, E.F. Benson’s series of comical stories set in the 1920s and 30s, was filmed by the BBC here in Rye. Further afield, explore the beautiful nature reserve at Rye Harbour, stroll amongst the sand dunes at Camber, another popular film location, hire bikes or play golf on the links. The Gallery Apartment was such a great base for exploring Rye and the surrounding area. We loved the quirky old nature of the apartment, it was like stepping back into a bit of history but with all the mod cons you could need! It was also more spacious than we were expecting so great value for money. Fully recommend!

Wir haben uns in der Wohnung sehr wohl gefühlt. Besonders die kleine Gaube im Wohnzimmer hat es uns angetan.

Great stay. Excellent location. The parking facilities were great for a town location £2 overnight and only a short distance from property (and I have mobility problems). Very clean premises well quipped. Only concern was the locked premises. Needs a stronger locked premises as it’s part of a business premises. Thank you for a great stay. Would like to stay again.

We really enjoyed our stay at the apartment. It is very beautiful, clean and comfortable. Kitchen is well equipped. Bathroom is modern & clean. I found it very cosy and warm with unique design. The two bedrooms are good size (double & twin room). The location is superb, you do not need to drive if you want to explore Rye, everything including train station is within 5-10 mins walking distance to the flat. Andrea, the owner is amazing and she made sure we have everything we need. Thank you so much for a lovely stay. We will definitely return. Tasha & Maud

Although we really enjoyed our week the property was a bit tired decor wise. All the window frames were rotten and opening and closing was difficult. A few places were missed off the cleaning regime, there is a hole in the ceiling/ wall in the dining area and mould was forming around the hole. Fan cover missing from the bathroom as well as the door handle which was only held on with one screw either side. Now I’d like to say that although this property is very quirky and decor tired we had a great week in Rye, this accommodation is in a prime position for rail, buses, supermarket and some great shops and for the price it was a good choice. Just a note if you have children there are two places very nearby that have music until well past 12 midnight and on two occasions 2.30am. Which can both be heard plainly in the apartment. This is an honest post, I’m not picking faults and would consider staying here again if a few things were sorted out first.

Wanted a Christmas retreat to try to heal the wounds of losing our dog earlier in the year and this break was perfect. The apartment exceeded our expectations. It was spacious, yet cosy, quirky, comfortable and full of fabulous photographs. The only thing missing from our super Christmas getaway was snow! Oh well, can't have everything! Would highly recommend staying in this beautiful flat, if you fancy a holiday in one of the loveliest towns in the south of England.

The only two draw backs of this apartment are 1. Access to the front door is down a narrow dark alley, only uses by the flat and quite safe. 2. You need to park in the public car park which is a five minute walk up hill. These are both very small minuses in a fantastically situated apartment. I have stayed twice and will again. Plus contact with the owners is very good too.
