Good hotel in a convenient location.

Posted 11-Jun-2015
Pros: Comfortable hotel in a convenient location.
Cons: Hotel in serious need of additional staff, during my stay service tended to be painfully slow.
Location: Very close to Rutland Water, excellent for walking and bike hire.
A very pleasant one night stay. Our room overlooked open fields, so private and relatively quiet. Excellent evening meal in a delightful conservatory. Service sadly tended to be quite slow primarily caused by insufficient staff. Visitors should be aware the hotel is immediately adjacent to a major road which can be noisy at peak times.

Excellent stay with delicious food and first class service. Could simply do with new signs at the entrance and a bit of sprucing here and there.

Hugely dissapointed

Posted 01-Jun-2015 on Hotels
Dirty room, tea/coffee splashes up the walls, dirty marks on lampshades , mouldy windows generally grubby. To top it off a banging noise all night that kept us awake only for the toilet to start gurgling and spitting up water and filling the room with an awful smell (rotten sewage) nice meal but overall hotel not worth the money. We were however refunded in the morning. Parents stayed at the same time and also had the foul sewage smell in their bathroom.

Worth a visit

Posted 01-Jun-2015 on Hotels
Just had the one night there after a long journey from Glasgow. Delighted to find that the room allocated to my mum (who has trouble walking far) was one suitable for disabled, even though it was a late booking and I'd forgotten to request a ground floor room for her. Our room was on the top floor with a nice view across the meadows and Rutland Water in the distance. Only slight complaint was that the room lighting was rather dim and, because our twin beds were zipped together, the bedside lights on the wall were too far away to make reading easy. When I mentioned this the next morning, the receptionist said they would have brought us extra lamps but I suggested they replace the wall lights with ones which can be angled, to get round this problem. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. Food was excellent; perfectly cooked megrim sole for me and lamb for my husband. Great breakfast, too with a generous helping of smoked salmon to accompany the scrambled eggs (eggs from the hotel's own hens). Breakfast was served in a room filled with Jack Vettriano pictures! The hotel is comfortable and welcoming....not chic and minimalist. The grounds include a wild meadow, a kitchen garden, even some highland cattle with calves! There is a lovely central courtyard, too. We will probably book a long weekend there in the future to give us more time to explore the area.

Stayed for one night. The hotel is set out well with a delightful terraced courtyard and an interesting meadow walk at the back. The staff were all very helpful and dinner in the conservatory was very good.

Shame about the smell of smoke

Posted 30-Apr-2015
Pros: The service at dinner was excellent.
Cons: Make sure rooms are designated smoking or non smoking rooms.
We stayed for two nights and on arrival checked in to be told our request for a double rather than a twin could not be met because the hotel was full. That wasn't a problem and we went to the room. When we entered it smelt so strongly of smoke I went straight back to reception but they could only offer us one alternative room which was dingy, smaller and dark on the car park side of the hotel. As our room was lovely apart from the smoke smell we asked for an air freshener to be put in the room, opened all the windows and hoped the smell would go away. No solid air freshener was provided despite asking 5 times for this over our stay and the smell appears to be ingrained into the fabric of the room, and now all our clothes and our hair. We did get given a spray air freshener which was ineffective, but even that was removed by the housekeeping staff after the first night!

Excellent location for Rutland Water

Posted 10-Apr-2015
Pros: Ground floor rooms very convenient to walk our dog in the spacious hotel grounds with circular grass paths adjacent to field full of Highland Cattle.
Cons: Bathroom needs updating in the room we occupied, and it was a little on the dark side during the day despite several small windows.
Location: Ideal location for Rutland Water with Oakham, Garden Centres and Boat Trips etc. a short drive away.
Celebration of my wife's special birthday. Booked Superior Twin Room for two days accompanied by our two year old Miniature Schnauzer. Large Bouquet of flowers and balloons ordered through Inter Flora in room on arrival together with unexpected welcome pack dog bowls and duvet bed for our dog including a welcome note from the hotel's resident dog, a nice touch from caring hotel staff. Room spacious with separate settee and tea/coffee facilities, easily controlled heaters comfortable single beds but duvets bit too heavy for me. Bathroom/Shower spacious but a little dated and tired, elderly persons using shower require additional hand support and bath a bit too slippery for comfort. Dined in hotel restaurant on second night and really enjoyed the entire food and service experience though not exactly cheap. Full English Breakfast a little disappointing one, tiny overcooked rasher of bacon, one sausage and one egg only together with usual bits and pieces tomato etc. however service prompt and efficient.

Remarkable value

Posted 30-Mar-2015 on Hotels
Working in Stamford, I chose this hotel as it was close by but in the countryside. Its special offer tempted me, but I would have willingly paid more. For one breakfast I chose smoked salmon, for the other the full English. Both were first rate. The room lacked for nothing. I even had an extra treat of seeing a duck, migrating from nearby Rutland Water, lay an egg on the lobby carpet.

Beautiful hotel in lovely Rutland.

This is a delightful hotel. The atmosphere was very welcoming, and the room was comfortable and particularly well equipped. The restaurant is excellent, and the chef's recommendation of locally caught trout was most welcome as it was superb. Quite the nicest hotel I've stayed in for a long while.
