Runnymede, four miles from Surrey, is one of England's most iconic historic sites. It was here that King John was effectively coerced by his rebellious barons into signing the Magna Carta in 1215, which had the effect of limiting royal power for centuries to come. If you're based at a Surrey hotel in Windsor or elsewhere close by, you really must come along to Runnymede and see where democracy in England had its beginnings. The peasants had to wait quite a bit longer than the barons for more equal treatment (no surprise there, then!), but this is where the Feudal System finally started to unravel and things began to change for the better for the downtrodden population!
