Royal Tunbridge Wells is a picture-perfect historic town in Kent which has a distinguished history of Royal patronage and many fine attractions. Based at a good hotel or guesthouse in the area such as the magnificent Royal Wells Hotel or Danehurst House, you'll be able to explore the history, heritage and attractions of this most attractive part of Kent.
Helped to a great extent by generous Royal patronage, Tunbridge Wells became a wildly successful and popular spa town during the 17th and 18th centuries. Mineral springs had been discovered in the town back in 1606 but weren't exploited until much later on. In the 1700s the famous Pantiles were designed and laid out. This is probably the attraction visitors come here mostly to see - a lovely historic paved and colonnaded promenade which derives its name from the original square tiles used in its construction. It's the perfect spot to cool off, in the classical Italian style, during a long hot summer!
Other sights of interest around Royal Tunbridge Wells include Penshurst Place, a superbly preserved medieval manor house. It was built in the 1340s and has a 60-foot high Great Hall, making it possibly the finest example of its kind in the country. Whether you're based in a Kent hotel in Royal Tunbridge Wells or at a B&B or family-run guesthouse in one of the neighbouring villages, it makes a super destination for an afternoon excursion.
This whole region of the Kent countryside is famous for its moated castles and landscaped gardens, so while you're here you need to plan carefully to make the most of your visit. Sissinghurst Castle and Scotney Castle, for example are just a short drive away, and there are many other points of interest in the immediate area. The nearby Weald is popular for cycling, walking and horse riding, and based at one of the local B&Bs or hotels you're guaranteed to have a wonderful and fun-filled time here in the heart of Kent.
