Pocket Guide: Romney Marsh

Romney Marsh and its close neighbour Walland Marsh were until Roman times completely submerged by the sea at high tide. However, those enterprising Romans drained the Romney section, and the Middle Ages saw the gradual reclamation of the Walland area. Together, these two marshes formed an extensive area of rich arable land perfectly adapted to grazing and crops, and in medieval times in particular Romney Marsh was renowned for its bulky sheep and the quantity and quality of the wool they produced. Today, Romney Marsh offers easy access to attractions like Dungeness and makes a good destination for a visit from your Kent hotel, guesthouse or B&B, which you'll find scattered all across the county.

Hotels in Kent near Romney Marsh

In the south-eastern tip of Romney Marsh you'll find the lonely and sometimes creepy spot of Dungeness. It is dominated by a lone lighthouse and two famous or infamous (depending on your point of view) nuclear power stations, which give the area its distinctive skyline. The hugely popular Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Light Railway has its southernmost termination here. Opened back in 1927, this carries passengers during the summer months for 14 miles along the coast up to Hythe on trains which are less than a third of the size of regular ones in use today. It's an exciting, scenic and very cosy journey and makes a brilliant excursion for your Kent B&B or guesthouse.

There are other attractions in the Romney Marsh area too, including the old Royal Military Canal. During the Napoleonic Wars this was built as a supply and defence line when it was feared in 1804 that Napoleon was planning to invade England. It's just one of the interesting old forts and other monuments that are a legacy of those and more recent conflicts. Thankfully most of them never had to be used, and today visitors can enjoy what's left of them, for their shelter and scenic views across the surrounding countryside. Enjoy all this and more on a break of any length with Kent hotels.
