Step into the cobbled centre of Rennes and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d been transported back in time. The brightly-coloured crooked houses of Champ-Jacquet square are Instagram-perfect, and you can sit here with a coffee and soak in the medieval atmosphere while people watching in one of the prettiest parts of town.
Despite being the capital of Brittany, Rennes is a busy city that feels a lot smaller than it actually is. This is probably because of the friendly locals and the petite nature of most of the city’s streets, particularly by the river and winding through the older neighbourhoods. Unlike many French towns, Rennes doesn’t have one specific old town, instead you’ll have to explore the whole place to find its ramparts, cathedral, Saint George Palace, the Opera House and its many peaceful parks and gardens. Luckily, it’s not hard to get around, thanks to the futuristic-looking metro and a city-wide cycle-sharing scheme.
Visitors from all over the world are mostly drawn to Rennes because of its medieval architecture and close ties to history – the main shopping street, Place des Lices, was once a jousting arena, so you're walking in the footsteps of knights as you indulge in some retail therapy.
