Pocket Guide: Giza - Pyramids Pyramids at Giza Hotels

The Seventh Ancient Wonder of the World

The Pyramids at Giza are one of the world’s most iconic sights, their triangular silhouettes unmistakable against the Egyptian desert. The largest of the three, the Great Pyramid at Giza, stands at a whopping 450-feet high, and is the last surviving example of the seven ancient wonders of the world. Indeed, the whole pyramid complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. No matter how many photographs of them you may have seen, standing in front of these immense ancient constructions is a jaw-dropping experience few could forget.

The pyramids are a testament to ancient engineering, the grand result of the imaginations and ambition of the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkara (grandfather, father and son), who built them as places of burial over 4,000 years ago. It took tens of thousands of men twenty years and over 2.3 million limestone blocks, each weighing an average of 2.5 tons, to build the Great Pyramid, the first and largest of the three. The question of exactly how such an incredible feat was achieved is one that baffles archaeologists to this day.

Visiting the Pyramids at Giza

Enjoy the spectacular sight of sunrise over the pyramids from the balcony of your hotel in Giza before venturing inside the gargantuan buildings to explore the dusty, narrow maze of corridors. You can get up-close to the sarcophagi, which would once have held the mummies of the Egyptian kings and experience what it might have felt like for the early explorers and archaeologists who discovered them.

Hotels in Giza

The pyramid complex is in Giza, eight miles outside of the busy metropolis of Cairo in what was once an ancient fishing port on the River Nile. Today, Giza offers an enchanting and laid-back place to stay where you can wake up each morning and peer out of your hotel window to views of one of the most impressive sights on the planet. You can find accommodation to suit all budgets and tastes, ranging from no-frills guesthouses to affordable and comfortable three-star hotels to majestic four-and five-star resorts with sumptuous facilities.
