Plaza de España

Spend time admiring the fountains, bridges and painted ceramic tiles in Seville’s most impressive plaza, then sample tapas in restaurants surrounding the square.

Make your way past the central Vicente Traver fountain and cross the curved canal on one of the Plaza de España’s ornate bridges. Walk along the semi-circular outside of the building and admire the mixture of art deco and renaissance styles, as well as the colorful ceramic tiles arranged all around the outside of the building.

The Plaza de España was constructed in 1928 as the centerpiece for the Ibero-American Exposition the following year. Unlike many exposition buildings, it was built to last, and the curving moat, tall towers and high arches of the overlooking building’s façade make it one of the most attractive plazas in Spain.

Stand back and admire the symmetry that the plaza’s designer Anibal Gonzalez put in place. You’ll see the plumes of the Vicente Travers fountain in the center of the square, with the two high towers either side of the curved façades as a backdrop. Line up the viewfinder of your camera to include the glassy waters of the moat and the attractive, curved shape of its four bridges.

Get up close to examine the 48 benches within the structure’s arches. Each of these contains a different azulejo, a picture made in ceramic tiles, depicting a different province in Spain. Enter the building and look up to admire the craftsmanship that went into making the coffered ceiling.

Film buffs might want to locate the exact place where some of their favorite movies were shot. Lawrence of Arabia and Star Wars I and III all used the plaza as a setting.

Enjoy a coffee or some tapas in one of the many cafés surrounding the plaza or come back at night when the lights shimmer on the moat and fountain.

The Plaza de España is located in the Maria Luisa Park, within easy walking distance of Seville’s historic center. It’s open at any time of the day or night and free to admire.
