I was pretty happy with the hotel itself. No problems other than missing hand towels the first night, which were provided the following night. The location was not great. Though it's close to the Royal Palace, it's not really close to anything else. Also, the area around the hotel is somewhat sketchy at night. Have to either walk under the dark bridge with some unsavory characters meandering around or take a cab directly to the hotel door.
"Excellent location. Front desk staff very helpful."
We arrived late and thankfully decided to arrive at the Principe pio and walk uphill per the hotels email. If we had come off at the plaza de espana I am sure we would have become lost in the dark! The front desk staff were always courteous, polite and helpful. Even helping carry our buggy up the reception steps to the lift.
The room was very comfortable and well cleaned every day but the maid did not replenish toiletries\ coffee and tea satchets regularly. Ended up going to the maids trolley in the mornings before going out to make sure we had enough. The walls are a bit paper thin so expect to hear your neighbours if this kind of thing bothers you. We had a 2 year old with us so can't imagine we were all that silent!:)
The roof top terrace is stunning and is open to guests during the day. Great views. We did eat once on the terrace at night. The food was good but the service was rushed, and we felt that despite booking in advance that they couldn't get us out quick enough. There was a queue to be seated. Quite disappointing and a low point on our trip.
We had three WiFi devices and all had good connection. So this was excellent.
Very happy with the hotel generally.

Pocket Guide: Madrid Plaza de Espana - Princesa Hotels
At the western end of the arterial Gran Via, Plaza de España is home to Franco-era architecture like the monstrous red and white Edificio España. The nearby Palacio Real (royal palace) was rebuilt in 1764 and is still used for state functions. It contains some wonderfully ornate rooms and is free on Wednesdays to EU citizens (take your passport). Admire the statues in the lovely Sabatini Gardens afterwards.
