Pocket Guide: Bahamas
A smattering of around 2,000 tiny islands, the Bahamas might be relatively small but they’ve played an unusually big role in world history. It was here in 1492 that Columbus first landed, discovering the New World. In many ways, the islands probably don’t look too different now than they did back then. They’ve still got stunning white sand beaches and pristine cays. The main additions have been the colourful port towns that add character and top leisure opportunities, such as golf courses and a choice of superb resorts. Technically an Atlantic island group rather than a Caribbean one, it still very much has the laid back vibes and culture of its nearest neighbours. There’s so much to see and do from your hotel in Bahamas.
Where to Stay in Bahamas
New Providence - This large island is twinned with the aptly named Paradise Island to form the largest land mass in the Bahamas. It’s also where you’ll find the capital Nassau.
Grand Bahama - Another of the largest islands, it’s a beautiful place that has preserved much of its pristine environment, including a vast underwater cave system.
Bimini - Surrounded by shallow reefs, this small group of islands is perched to the western edge of the island group and is blessed with incredible marine life coming in off the Gulf Stream.
Exuma - A group of almost 400 islands and cays, many of which are privately owned and house high end resorts. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as iguanas and sharks.
Abacos - An island group largely consisting of Great Abaco and Little Abaco. This is also where you can discover Disney’s privately owned island.
How to Make the Most of Your Hotel in the Bahamas
With so many beautiful islands to explore you could spend years discovering the Bahamas. Start with some of the major landmarks on New Providence and Paradise Island, where you can also visit the capital Nassau. Head to the Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation which details the islands’ dark past. Check out the many forts that dot the islands, a remnant of the piracy and smugglers that used to sail these waters. Walk around the colourful streets of Nassau and its Old Town, immersing yourself in the Bahamian culture. Spend some time at the Piracy Museum or meet wildlife at the Ardastra Gardens and Zoo.
Being surrounded by water in every direction, water plays a big part in Bahamian culture and lifestyles. Try out exhilarating watersports like kitesurfing and kayaking, explore the deep on a diving or snorkelling adventure or take a boat out to spot dolphins and sharks. The water is almost always warm throughout the year, and there are some sublime beaches if you’re looking for a more relaxing break. Try your luck at one of the many casinos on Bimini or put on your boots and explore the Eco trails around the Clifton Heritage Site. There’s also golf, galleries and cave tours to keep you entertained throughout your stay.
