The highway motel in the heart of the town
The Esplanade came across as more like a highway motel rather than a destination in the heart of a historic town. It has a great location with access to all that is good and great around the charming town of Freo. But pity the hotel doesn't make more of an effort to BE a part of the Freo personality, rather than just existing. Lobby, bar and reception all pretty forgettable. The bar next door had much more of a personality. The room had been upgraded from our last stay about 7 years ago; it was clean and comfortable but lacked any personality or homely touches. The little balcony was grim. Plastic chairs and nothing else. The shower was in a bathtub [which isn't great and is just asking for an accident], the bed was a little too soft, and there were very limited TV channels. ALL water was chargeable, which isn't very hospitable. Most hotels give standard mineral water FOC and charge for sparkling. This tells you this isn't a hotel that is very customer-friendly at all. Not much of soul to this hotel, which is a shame. And the neighbourhood immediately around was shabby -- most of the retail shops were closed. This is a great shame as it has a direct connection to the markets and could be a great retail and hospitality street. All in, not a hotel that will be memorable. We were told that there are some newer, more interesting options in Freo these days. If I were you, I'd check them out.
