Frequently asked questions

How much does a beach hotel in Penryn cost?
Prices for beach hotels in Penryn vary, but you can find a great deal from £67 on Expedia. You're likely to find lower rates if you're travelling during the off-peak season or mid-week. Find the best deals by being flexible with your dates, and sort search results by "Price: low to high" for our cheapest rates.
Which area of Penryn is best to stay in for beaches?
The best area to stay in Penryn for beaches is the coastline extending south-east from the town, particularly around the Falmouth Bay area.

While Penryn itself is a historic port town on the Penryn River, its immediate surroundings don't feature sandy beaches. However, a short drive or bus journey will take you to several excellent options. Gyllyngvase Beach, often referred to as 'Gylly', is one of the most popular and easily accessible. It's a crescent-shaped sandy beach with excellent facilities, including a café right on the sand, toilets, and watersports equipment hire. It's a Blue Flag beach, meaning it meets high standards for water quality and cleanliness.

Families will find Gyllyngvase particularly suitable. The beach has a gentle slope into the sea, making it good for children, and there are often rock pools to explore at low tide. The nearby Queen Mary Gardens offer a nice green space for a picnic or a stroll away from the sand.

For couples looking for a slightly more secluded spot, Maenporth Beach, a little further along the coast from Gyllyngvase, is a lovely option. It's a sheltered cove with fine sand and calm waters, superb for swimming or kayaking. There's also a café and watersports centre here, offering paddleboarding and kayaking.
What is the best time of year to stay in a beach hotel in Penryn?
The best time to stay in a beach hotel in Penryn is during July and August, which are the warmest months. The average temperatures hover around a pleasant 19°C, superb for enjoying the Cornish coast.

During these peak summer months, the beaches are bustling with activity, and the sea is at its most inviting for swimming and watersports. It's a wonderful time for families to enjoy classic seaside holidays, building sandcastles, or exploring rock pools. Many local events and festivals are also in full swing, adding to the vibrant setting. Securing reservations for popular beachside restaurants and activities well in advance is advisable during this busy period.

For a slightly different pace, June presents an excellent alternative. The weather is still very pleasant, often reaching the high teens, and the days are wonderfully long.

What beach activities should we do in Penryn?
The best beach activities to do in Penryn are swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking at Maenporth Beach and Gyllyngvase Beach.

Maenporth Beach, just a short drive from Penryn, is a sheltered cove known for its calm, clear waters, making it ideal for swimming and paddleboarding. The beach is sandy and gently sloped, great for a relaxed day by the sea. You'll find a cafe right on the beach, which is handy for refreshments. Families with young children often enjoy this beach due to its gentle waves and ease of access.

Gyllyngvase Beach, located in Falmouth but easily reachable from Penryn, is another excellent option. It's a larger, crescent-shaped beach with fine golden sand and is popular for kayaking and paddleboarding, with equipment hire often available nearby. The beach has a promenade with cafes and restaurants and is a good spot for a pleasant stroll.
Is it cheaper to book flights and a beach hotel in Penryn as a package?
Booking a beach hotel and flight package on Expedia can be cheaper than booking flights and hotels separately. Bundling can lead to significant savings, especially for international travel or when booking a beach vacation package well in advance. However, savings vary depending on factors like destination, travel dates, and availability, so it's wise to compare options. With access to over 300,000 hotels worldwide, Expedia makes it easy to build the perfect travel package.
Can I cancel my beach hotel reservation on Expedia?
Many Expedia hotel reservations are refundable, provided that you cancel before the hotel's cancellation deadline. This is often within 24-48 hours of your scheduled arrival. Be sure to check your booking confirmation for the exact cancellation policy. For maximum flexibility, use Expedia's "Fully refundable property" filter during your search to find the right beach hotel in Penryn for you.
