Palazzo dei Priori

Stand in awe of religious artwork and wander through gilded halls in a palace that dates back to the 13th century.

Spend hours exploring the Palazzo dei Priori, a magnificent palace in the heart of Perugia’s old town. Inside, find a gallery that celebrates centuries of Italian art and municipal rooms covered in elaborate frescoes.

Study original features from when the palace was built between 1293 and 1297. During this era, Perugia was flourishing as an independent commune and the famous Fontana Maggiore was also built. The main rectangular building of the palace, which faces Corso Vannucci, dates back to this time. Further extensions were added in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Admire the vast exterior of the palace from Piazza IV Novembre. Look for the bronze statues of a lion and a griffin, the symbols of the Guelphs and Perugia, before entering. The statues outside are reproductions, but you can see the original sculptures in the National Gallery.

Look upward as you enter the Sala dei Notari to see ceilings adorned with frescoes. Eight colorful arches curve across the ceiling, which is decorated with paintings from around 1300. Search through all the images for scenes from the Old Testament and representations of Aesop’s fables.

More murals and frescoes can be found in the Collegio del Cambio, a 15th-century extension to the palace. This three-story building once hosted the money-changers guild. Admire the ornately decorated vaulted ceiling of the Sala dell’Udienza.

Survey historical artworks in the National Gallery of Umbria (Galleria Nazionale), which occupies the old palace building. See religious paintings on wood that date as far back as the 13th century. Discover the works of Umbrian painters such as Benedetto Bonfigli and Fiorenzo di Lorenzo. The gallery also contains art wrought in gold from Siena, ceramic floor tiles from the 15th century and canvas paintings from the 1800s.

Ride a bus to Piazza Italia and stroll through the old town to reach Palazzo dei Priori. The palace is open from Tuesday to Sunday and entrance to the Sala dei Notari is free.
