Top Otea Hotel Reviews

Mala Island Resort

Mala Island Resort

10/10 Excellent
"The resort is owned by a family and they take great care of it. They are very friendly and will provide you with everything you need. The cuisine is excellent and the island is quiet. You can only hear the gentle sound of the sea. They will arrange a trip to swim with whales, rent kayaks and also organize transportation to and from the airport by car and boat. I was a solo traveler for three nights and I can only praise everything. Thank you very much for a wonderful three days."

What is the best area to stay in Otea?
The best area to stay in Otea is Neiafu, the main town on Vava'u, offering convenience and access to the region's main attractions.Neiafu is the heart of Vava'u, situated on the picturesque Port of Refuge. It's a compact and walkable town with the majority of shops, restaurants, and tour operators lining the waterfront and the main street, Fatafehi Road. You'll find the central market here, along with government offices and the main quay for boat excursions.Couples looking for a relaxing yet engaging holiday will appreciate Neiafu. You'll have easy access to whale watching tours, sailing charters, and snorkelling trips directly from the harbour. Evenings can be spent enjoying waterfront dining with stunning sunset views. For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the town's small size makes it easy to discover local crafts and enjoy the laid-back pace. For those seeking a bit more seclusion while remaining close to Neiafu's amenities, smaller, more intimate resorts are dotted along the nearby peninsulas and islands accessible by a short boat ride.
When is the best time to go to Otea?
The best time to go to Otea, Vava'u, Tonga is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. This period offers consistently sunny days, lower humidity, and gentle breezes, making it ideal for outdoor activities and enjoying the natural beauty of the islands. The average daily temperature during these months is around 26-28°C, great for exploring. For travellers interested in marine life, particularly whale watching, the peak season is from July to October. This is when humpback whales migrate to the warm, protected waters of Vava'u to calve and mate. Many operators offer guided tours for close encounters, and the calm seas during these months make for excellent viewing conditions. If you prefer a quieter experience with fewer tourists, consider visiting in May or June. The weather is still excellent, and you'll find the islands less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed trip. You might also find better value on accommodation and activities during these shoulder months.Conversely, the wet season, from November to April, brings higher humidity, more rainfall, and a greater chance of tropical storms.
