I originally booked a hotel up the street, where I had previously stayed. It has cozy rooms and I booked one with a fireplace. The Portola Hotel was more expensive and disappointing in these ways: rooms were sterile, not cozy; I paid extra for the King Courtyard and it was a view of the roof and the roof of the atrium; the pool is in an adjacent building where you have to walk in your robe through a public courtyard to get to; pool and hot tub not that hot. Water pressure, not that good, Stain on the duvet when I folded it over. The lobby is nice but I didn't come to sit in the lobby. Overall, it was ok.
