Pocket Guide: Semmencherry Old Mahabalipuram Road Hotels

Known by four different names, the Old Mahabalipuram Road shows several faces of modern India. Officially it’s the State Highway 49A as well as Rajiv Gandhi Salai. But its more popular nickname is the IT Corridor, which reflects the constantly growing number of IT companies that have set up offices along this route.

Hotels near the Old Mahabalipuram Road

There’s a wide choice of hotels on and around the Old Mahabalipuram Road, and something to suit all budgets. You can choose a straightforward hotel with a business centre, or book a stay in a family-friendly hotel with amenities for kids. There’s also the option of booking a serviced apartment that comes with a kitchenette. Or you can splash out on a luxury hotel and enjoy facilities such as a swimming pool and a full-service spa.

Driving the Old Mahabalipuram Road

Starting at the Madhya Kailash Temple Junction in Chennai, the six-lane highway eventually joins the East Coast Road to Mahabalipuram. You could drive the toll road and pay the nominal charge, or hop on any of the buses from Chennai that stop at several points along the route. Many locals walk along the highway’s footpaths and others cycle the coast road.

What to See near the Old Mahabalipuram Road

Soon you’ll see why the route is called the IT Corridor. Most of India’s major IT companies have set up offices along the Old Mahabalipuram Road, so have institutions such as the Chennai Mathematical Institute, the Asian College of Journalism and the Hindustan College of Engineering. The infrastructure has been keeping pace with all this rapid growth, so you’ll also see residential areas, schools and shopping malls. In all, at least 70,000 people work along this route.

There’s little sign of things slowing down, as more IT parks pop up. That means even more amenities will be springing up, including cinemas, health clubs, playgrounds and more hotels. Once the road joins the East Coast Road, you can carry on to Mahabalipuram and visit this seaside town’s UNESCO-listed temples as well as its long expanse of sandy beach.
