Northumberland sits at the very top of England and encompasses some dramatic and beautiful scenery, including over 30 miles of stunning beaches. The Northumberland Coastline, as well as being an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is also a great place for a holiday, and there are a number of excellent hotels and guesthouses located in the region.
Whether your idea of a holiday means a spot of coasteering or windsurfing, or you'd rather lay down a towel and chill out under the sun, Northumberland's boasts a wide variety of beautiful beaches for you to enjoy. Overlooked by the imposing ruins of Bamburgh Castle, Bamburgh Castle Beach is the most popular beach in the region, largely sandy but with a few rocks and dunes to explore. In fact, most of Northumberland's beaches are sandy, and other great family beaches include Seahouses Beach, which is located near the picturesque fishing village of the same name, and Warkworth Beach, close to Warkworth village.
Northumberland also encompasses Holy Island, located just a few miles from the coast, where you'll find the magnificent Lindisfarne Priory. This sublime, otherworldly place also boasts a beautiful coastline of its own, notably Harbour Beach and the more remote Links Beach. The Northumberland coastline is a haven for all kinds of wildlife, with many coastal nature reserves in the region where you might be able to spot species like grey seals and roseate terns. In Northumberland, even when you're right on the coast you're never too far from some amazing historic landmarks, and there are lots of coastal castles in the area as well as, of course, the fascinating monastic relics at Lindisfarne.
The Northumberland coastline is very popular with tourists and so there are lots of Northumberland beach hotels and guesthouses dotted around the region, for example, the four-star Kimberley House, which is located in Berwick-upon-Tweed, a short distance from Spittal Beach and Splash Park. Spittal Beach is a family-friendly beach that boasts amusements, a splash-park and a picturesque Victorian promenade - a great place for a day out with the kids.
