Used to be so nice

Posted 09-May-2016
Contrary to reviews the woman on reception was excellent, chatty, helpful and pleasant. She was proud to tell us our budget room was one of the hotels refurbished rooms. First impressions of the room was that it is a loft conversion and you had to watch your head when getting in and out of bed, but it really isn't a problem. When we lifted the toilet lid however it hadn't been flushed! Contrary to Expedia website the free wifi is only in the lobby not in your room. I called back to reception to complain about the toilet and lack of wifi only for another young lady who was exiting the back office to jump into the conversation I was having with reception. The staff were going to see if we could change rooms but were told by this individual that the hotel was full and there was no point looking. Furthermore appeared to take great delight in informing us that the hotel website clearly stated ground and first floor for free wifi only. This turned out to be correct but an attitude like hers should not be customer facing. Disgusting. Nobody came to look at the toilet that did actually flush but did not remove the "products" unless operated 4 or 5 times. The sink was also very slow to empty. Every hotel has problems and it is not the fact you have a problem but how you deal with it that the customer remembers. We cancelled our table in the restaurant for the evening. We also found out that a bottle of house wine is £13.99 but in the sister hotel around the corner (The Grand) £9.99

The hotel was a lovely old building and very well positioned within the centre of Scarborough.

Needs money to bring back to glory!!!!

Pros: The oldie worldly charm and location.
When we arrived room not allocated to us, given keys went to room not prepared! Every where is in desperate need of money, the old charm is there but needs improvements. Most of staff are lovely except for young lady on reception who had no charm or manners.

Business Overnight

Posted 22-Feb-2016
Pros: Gym facilities
Cons: Internet, staff attitude, General upgrade
Location: Very central for Scarborough attractions
I booked this Hotel fairly late, choosing it mainly due to the gym. On arrival I was informed there was no parking, so I had to drive to a public carpark, a five minute walk away. They also said unfortunately their boiler was playing up so there was currently no hot water but it should be ok in the morning - it wasn't, so boiled a kettle, washed my hair and had an all over wash in the sink, not the best start to the day. Gym was decent but at an extra cost £2.50. Went to eat at 8.45pm! To be told the restaurant shuts at 8.00, so eat in the bar, very limited menu, then endured the loud entertainment was. Breakfast was fine. Overall I found the hotel very tired, the staff were very matter of fact and when I suggested I should get my meal free as compensation for no hot water, I was given an email address to bring up any issues. I won't be rushing back.

Room and bathroom size were great but was very disappointed with a few aspects! Mattress was very uncomfortable, was told I had to run water for 10 mins to get a hot bath, I ran it for 30 and bath water was only tepid. Breakfast was a disappointment too, kept running out of everything, people were queueing for plates, milk and orange juice. Don't think I would be in a hurry to stay again sadly!
