Such a beautiful hotel! Right by the train station which is super convenient (but can get loud) but besides that the room was absolutely beautiful along with the rest of the hotel. Will definitely stay here again!

Property is beautiful, there must be so much history in it but it shows in the rooms and the facilities. Closeness to train station is a huge positive till your given a room on the edge of the platform and wake up to every train announcement from 5.00am. Staff knew very well that they had put a family there but said sorry and that was it. Even though the floor was empty with quieter rooms!!

Fantastic location especially if you are traveling in by train! Holding baggage was very helpful. Room was a bit smaller than expected, however was perfect for an overnight trip.

Staff are very polite and helpful, hotel is conveniently located next to the station and beautiful building, entrance hall and large garden. I absolutely love the building and decor on the ground floor. Unfortunately the room was very dated, and the bed was extremely uncomforable (I like hard bed but the bed actually hurts me. My partner and I woke up several times due to aches and pain). The bathroom is very small with hardly anywhere to hang clothes or turn around. Shower handle fell off. Mini fridge was nosy we had to switch it off from the wall before going to bed. No hair dryer. No air conditioning. Lots of pumkin seeds (taken from the breakfast bar) outside the window attracting piegons /poo and they werent clean. It is an old hotel and so I dont expect the rooms to be modern and can accept the above. But what I find unaccpetable are 1. We asked for a quiet room, and were given a room facing the railway station and the restaurant (no views of course) , and the restaurant had loud music from the early afternoon!!! It was good that reception asked them to switch off the music and I thank the hotel staff for that. 2. This is totally NOT what i would expect from a good hotel...the breakfast! The sausages are poorly cooked , very dry and tasteless. Worst than fee breakfast included with some cheap chain hotels. We were only given 1 cup of tea or coffee and never been asked if we wanted a top up. Eggs are acceptable. Breakfast is definitely a big appointment.

A great location, walkable within 5 mins to the centre and all the activities you need. A well maintained hotel with a fantastic feel to it. We upgraded our room and it was massive with a super comfy bed and lovely bathroom. Will stay again when in York

Very close to main attractions in York, a very good location! Room was very hot, close to the train station lots of noises didn’t make for a great sleep, staff weren’t the friendliest, room wasn’t ready for check in but a drink voucher was given

The Principal Hotel is an amazing hotel. Very close to the train station and easy walking distance to the centre of York. Our room and washroom were spacious and comfortable. The staff were friendly and very helpful. This stay has been a highlight of our stays so far.

Fantastic building maintaining many original features. Staff friendly and attentive and more than willing to help with anything. Room was lovely, we stayed in a suite. There was some work going on in hotel, only to be expected in such a large hotel, but this didnt cause any issues. Excellent location for train station

What a wonderful hotel. Stayed here for 4 nights in March 2023. I honestly cannot fault the place. We had breakfast, afternoon tea, used all the facilities. Faultless! The room was beautiful. The location of the property was ideal for travel. It’s immediately next to the train station and within minutes of walking to the attractions in the city. I was given a room with an amazing room of the Minster. The Garden Room is a beautiful place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine or tea. However, the service for food there was less than desirable. The staff does not attend the tables or take orders. It was a constant walk up to the bar and order, wait, pay and then walk back to table. I didn’t mind that process but it was unclear upon sitting down what the expectation is and for the prices, it seemed it should be more than self service. I also prepaid for drink vouchers on the website at at discounted price. When I got to the hotel and asked for them, no one seemed to know what I was talking about. The vouchers appeared on my bill but then no drinks were applied to them. It was too much of a process to argue the double paying so I just let it go.

Lovely hotel around the reception area and the Garden Room..Great location and walking distance to all the sites,shops bars and restaurants. We did have an issue with our room on the first night whereby the bed had practically collapsed and the bathroom dado rail was not clean along with cobwebs in the room..Shower leaked and the armchairs were stained. We went to reception whereby we were dealt with by a lovely chap who was very helpful and immediately changed our room. Just feel that housekeeping needs to up the game with the eye for detail on the cleanliness on the rooms as our second room also had cobwebs and the bathroom did smell bad with the drains or plug holes not being clean but this was dealt with very promptly by reception.. On the we had a great time in York.

My wife and I had a really nice two night stay. The hotel is fabulous. The superior king size room spot on. We decided to have breakfast in the hotel and was not disappointed. The property was simply stunning from the outside to the inside. It has been very well maintained. I felt like I was living a luxurious life. The staff were very kind and helpful. Our room was beautiful and cozy. The one thing I look for in a hotel is an amazing bathroom. I believe the bathroom in our room is the best bathroom in a hotel room that I have ever had. I felt like I was in a spa. I had never ordered room service, and I am glad I did at Principal York. It was worth it! Everything was exceptional from the moment we arrived until the moment we left! Not quite up to standard
The Principal is very easy to get to and has ample onsite parking (extra charge). Reception staff were very friendly, efficient and helpful. Our bedroom (room 321) was quite small with what seemed like a small double bed. Although it was quite mild for December and the bedroom was not cold, the radiator did not work - reception was informed at checkout. We also found blood stains on the duvet cover but forgot to inform reception. The bathroom was also small with the toilet squeezed in at the end, however fittings were clean and shower was really good. Overall the hotel was very impressive but the bedroom let it down.

Loved York but unfortunately I felt for the price we paid for this hotel the room we were given was very disappointing! With breakfast for two nights we paid just short of £400 for two nights! We usually go abroad for the markets but decided to upgrade and stay nearer home this time. The room was very small ( I was shocked at the size of the room as the money we paid I really expected plush) and there was a problem with the heat on night number one, it was like a sauna even having the windows opened we could not sleep! The two night stay meant we visited York for one day and after a night of no sleep we were too exhausted to enjoy anything! The hotel itself lovely, spa facilities very nice! They did move us to another much cooler room for the second night and they apologized for what was an obvious problem in the room we’d been given which was ok but I was very disappointed! York is fabulous but I think maybe a travelodge would have been just as good for us if not better!
