Friendly not stuffy

Posted 27-Aug-2016
Pros: The bed and the staff.
Cons: Continental breakfast could offer a bit more variety. Also would be nice to have warm rolls and croissants.
Location: Ideally situated for York station and central York.
Excellent one night stay at the Grand in York. stayed to celebrate my husbands 60th Birthday and this was acknowledged by the staff. Very nice surprise. Very friendly and personable staff without being stuffy. Lovely room, very large and the most comfortable hotel bed I have ever slept on.

Good location; excellent service

Posted 23-Aug-2016
Pros: Service and staff. Location and building.
Cons: As every room was previously an office of railway company, every room is different. Would be interesting to see what is generally available in rooms.
Location: Walk the city walls; river cruises; York Minster; Theatre Royal; historic town, pubs and tea rooms. York horse racing.
Enjoyed a three day mid week stay. Checking in was delayed while they tried to accommodate our request for a higher floor and we were very please with the result. The conversion to a hotel from the HQ of the N.E. Railway company gives the hotel a unique feel and some history. Located within the city walls (within sight) and a short walk from the train station, the hotel is well located for all city attractions (wall, river, York Minster, theater, city). My wife enjoyed the spa facilities. Staff were very helpful and attentive. Hotel was busy (good sign). We did not have an opportunity to dine at the hotel but the facilities looked good. Overall very welcoming. We would certainly return there if visiting York. Not sure how the major addition being built onto the back of the hotel will impact its attraction in the long run.

Birthday treat

Posted 23-Aug-2016
Pros: The wonderful room and the welcoming and friendly staff.
Location: The hotel is centrally located to visit places such as York Minister, York Dungeon, National Railway Museum and the Castle Museum .
This is an amazing place to stay. I had stayed before on a" girls weekend" but this time I was treating my husband. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we had wonderful and friendly service from all the staff. Our room was huge and really well equipped.I had arranged for some extra treats as we were celebrating but the hotel also added a few little extras including a hand written card. The hotel is a great base for exploring York and and the surrounding area but what really sets it apart is the high standards of service combined with welcoming and friendly staff.

Fantastic hotel even more fantastic staff

Posted 07-Aug-2016
We had a wonderful stay at The Grand to celebrate my partners birthday and our engagement , very beautiful room and cleanliness an excellent standard. All staff extremely professionaland approachable nothing was too much trouble. At breakfast the next morning my partner took poorly and the staff were fantastic immediately coming to her aid and quickly calling an ambulance. All staff wee magnificent in collecting belongings from our room and fetched my car to the door. Nothing was too much trouble. Gladly she is now on the mend but will definitely be going back again!!

Fantastic hotel in the centre of York

Posted 26-Jul-2016
Room was lovely and spacious with MB toiletries in both the shower room and bathroom! 2 glasses of champagne too. Lovely spa. Breakfast was nice but not sure the full Yorkshire breakfast was worth the £5 upgrade - bacon could have been crisper, toast more golden brown. Has the feeling it was all just taken from the hot plate rather than cooked to order. Also had to ask a couple of times for extra tea. Had a fantastic stay. Just a few tweaks and it would be perfect.

I expected more (given their reputation and price)

Posted 23-Jul-2016
My room key stopped working twice, so I had to go to the main desk to reset it. I asked for a wake up call one day at 6am: the call never came. Fortunately, I woke up by myself, otherwise I'd be late for a very important meeting. I couldn't get cold water in the sink: only hot (or at best warm) water was coming out. Most staff was very professional, but one particular concierge was quite rude: he was visibly annoyed before he even started talking with me, and for no good reason got more annoyed while talking with me. [I was simply asking for a restaurant recommendation.] Maybe he just had a bad day... While none of these things (except for the wake up call) are so terrible, one does expect more from a hotel of this category.
