Great hotel right in the heart of York.

Posted 22-May-2017
Pros: Location, size of rooms and the ambience.
Location: Walking distance to the train station as well as the town centre.
A lovely grand hotel with wide corridors & high ceilings sympathetically converted to something of a bygone era. One arrives greeted by friendly doormen, more than happy to help with the bags. The foyer leads to a bar & dining area to one side adorned with comfy chairs, lovely pot plants and an array of different champagnes on display, all watched by CCTV. If you like to try an array of different gins & whiskies this is available also. The room we chose was spacious with sufficient amenities, the only dissapointment was a shower over the bath, difficult for myself as I had arrived with a very painful back. I also had a massage at the spa where I was rather underwhelmed by the therapist who didn't acknowledge my need for more work in that particular area.

Great location with easy access from station.

Posted 22-May-2017
Pros: Location Staff Building Cleanliness
Cons: As stated above
Location: Excellent for walks, shopping, history and culture
Pros: Staff fantastic Location brilliant. Spotlessly clean. Easy access to centre of town. Swimming pool fabulous. Room good size and well laid out. Cons (minor), but, in my opinion, relative to my overall rating. Specifically requested a quiet room when booking, and although on the 4th floor, it was at the front of the hotel, which was still noisy. Sirens, revellers and the turnout of a club nearby disturbed sleep. Tried to arrange some spa treatments, but staff unable to accomodate because 'full'. Advice was I should have booked beforehand. Didn't bother with breakfast as better places to eat outside. Pillows hard and lumpy. UHT milk cartons in fridge. Stayed two nights and don't believe bedding was changed on the second. As said, minor quibbles in the scheme of things, as the hotel is in a superb location and is beautiful. But! it is not cheap, and If, it is going to sell itself as a five star, it needs to up the ante a bit ( particularly on the areas where it appears corners are being cut). .

Great facilities, excellent staff, proper 5* hotel

Posted 20-May-2017
Pros: Great staff and lovely large rooms
Cons: The dining room lacks atmosphere and is a little sedate
Location: Fabulous location if travelling by train and only a 15 minute walk to the racecourse or centre of town
I was greeted by smiles at the door and reception and when my room wasn't ready they found another that was. All the staff epitomise Yorkshire hospitality and friendliness. Rooms are big, beautifully modern and comfortable with excellent beds and snuggly duvets. The bathrooms are swish and large. The bar has real character and the dining room (a bit quiet on the day we dined in) food is very good. Overall a fabulous hotel!

Classic "Grand Hotel"

Posted 16-May-2017
Pros: Elegance, sumptuous lounges, bar, and breakfast facility. Lavish breakfast buffet.
Cons: For older people, the high-entry bathtubs with NO grab bars are an extreme safety hazard.
Location: It's very near the railroad station and famous railway museum. About a 15 minute walk to the extraordinary York Minster.
Spacious room, nicely decorated, up to date facilities. Old-fashioned high-end resort service from attentive staff.

Cons: For a 5 star hotel the breakfast was a bit similar to Little Chef. But a minor comment - hotel and staff were great.
It was fine - if you don't want my opinion fine but don't make me write essays.
