The Ellangowan Hotel was designed by a Reading architect to be one of the first purpose built hotels in Western Scotland, & was built in 1898. It was a coaching inn used by ferry travellers between England & Northern Ireland. Christian Pilgrims stayed & caught the ferry across the river Cree to St Ninians Cave and Chapel, the Saint who brought Christianity to Scotland in the 6th Century.In 1973, the Ellangowan rooms & bar was made famous by Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward & Brit Eckland in the 1973 classic cult movie, 'The Wicker Man'The hotel has a 30-60 cover restaurant, a classic public & lounge licenced bars, pool table, 10 ensuite bedrooms including a 4 poster bed, access to half acre of gardens, & for 2019 a drying room & cycle workshop.Local Creetown bowling green, 2 museums, a children's play area with a zip wire, tennis court, heated swimming pools (Summer only), a 900 metre hill, woodland walks, national cycle route 7, kirroughtree/7stanes cycle routes, fishing and shooting.

There was a terrible smell of chips from the kitchen pervading the whole building I understand there will be new owners now they have some work to do as fundamentally this place could workwell

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was clean although, in particular the bathroom, needs to see some renovation work.

Abandoned night
I have left a review of this hotel. I booked using a bonus night. Impressed as i am with 98% of hotels booked via your site i have rarely been so dissapointed. I was travelling thorugh Dumfries and Galloway this hotel at a mid way stop over seemed ideally situated for our plan. Upon arrival at 1:45pm all the doors were locked there seemed to be no life in the hotel I knocked upon all doors and looked through the available windows... the net curtains of which were grey dirty and looked like they had never been cleaned.... the paint was peeling and seemed to have been on for 30 years or more. There was moss and plants growing out of the gutters And the hotel looked abandoned There was dirt on the doors that looked like it had been there years . As we were cold and hungry and hoping for a place to relax and get a shower we were upset that the doors were locked and no answer when knocked on the doors. We went to the gem museum nearby for a warm and some food Then returned to see if the doors were open They were not open .. . So we drove the 150 mile three hour journey home and aborted our final holiday plans. No one called to ask why we didnt checkin and i assumed therefore that the hotel was empty as i previously thought. I am completely dissapointed with my experience at the hotel i could not get into. There was a two star certificate in window but it looked old. The hotel from the outside looked nothing like the photo on your site. Regards ian Gregg
