Pocket Guide: Newmarket

This medieval market town has existed for at least eight centuries and is arguably Britain's leading horse-racing centre. You can find a good variety of hotels in Newmarket and the surrounding area, from affordable modern hotels to deluxe apartments.

About the Racecourse

Accommodating around 45,000 spectators, Newmarket Racecourse holds numerous prestigious horse-racing events throughout the year. Indeed, the sport has been practised at or near this site since at least the early-17th Century, with two annual races taking place each spring and autumn by the 18th Century.

One of the most prestigious events in the racing calendar is the 2000 Guineas Stakes, Group 1 flat horse race that is one of the nation's five classic races and has been held for well over 200 years.

Comfortable Rooms at Newmarket Hotels

Whatever accommodation you choose in Newmarket, you'll sleep comfortably with good quality bedding. Some hotel rooms may include tea and coffee-making facilities, and almost all accommodation will have WiFi access so you can easily check your e-mails and research local attractions and places to eat out online.

Visit the National Horseracing Museum

On the historic High Street, this venue has a fascinating collection of horse-racing memorabilia and the history of the sport. Learn about some of the nation's most famous jockeys and horses, see the magnificent equestrian painting collection, and visit the Vestey Gallery of British Sporting Art to observe more artworks representing other popular sports like archery and fishing.

Take a Day Trip to Bury St. Edmunds

Just a short drive from Newmarket's hotels, Bury St. Edmunds is the home of Green King, the largest British-owned brewery. It's also renowned for its cathedral, which was built on a site that has been a place of worship for more than 900 years. The original church, which was remodelled on numerous occasions over the centuries, was developed into a cathedral in the late-20th Century, when new chapels, a visitor centre, a choir school, and a chancel were built

Also within easy reach of hotels in Newmarket is Ickworth House, a beautiful Italianate country house that was designed in a Neo-Classical theme and surrounds stunning landscaped gardens.
