Home Away from Home
In the last decade, each of our twice-annual visits to Manhattan has always been marked by stepping through the doors of the Sofitel. Truly our home away from home, it feels intimate and luxurious without being overwhelming and gaudy. Close to Times Square and Broadway, it's an excellent place if you're a fan of the arts. Admittedly each trip we've made has been as a couple, and while there may be more family-oriented hotels, Sofitel is perfect at being a cozy spot for couples and business travelers especially to recharge for the night.
The rooms are fairly generous in size, given the location, and I absolutely love the marble bathrooms with their showers and tubs. My only complaint here would be that I've always wished they had proper locking doors for the bathroom for *ahem* privacy, but turn on all the faucets and you get that privacy while mother nature weeps.
There's an attached restaurant and bar hidden around the corner from the reception that serves not too bad, albeit overpriced food (but this is to be expected at a luxury hotel). However, none of that matters because, well, you're in New York City... Great food could be had just a couple blocks away.
As for the staff, we're almost always pleased with their level of service and attention to detail. Sometimes however, they can go overboard, such as when we forgot to put the 'Do Not Disturb' sign up, and an over-eager housekeeper kept calling at us for several minutes through the latch for turn down service.
