Olivia and her team were very warm, welcoming and helpful. Shakespeare Hotel is very charming, has everything you need and it is located conveniently close to Base Camp where you catch the shuttle to the mountains.

Well located in Echoland
I stayed for 3 days whilst my friends apartment had guests. The hotel staff were lovely, the room was small but clean and did what it needed. Location is very good. Would recommend.

A good place for direct access to Hakuba
The Shakespeare is ideally situated for hitting the slopes and enjoying the local restaurants. Access to the buses at Hakuba base camp is a 1 minute walk across the street. There are a number of good restaurants nearby, but you should reserve early to get a seat. The Shakespeare can help, and they offer good recommendations on the area. We stayed in the annex building. The carpet in our room was stained and covered with a rug in one spot. There are a lot of early 20s tourists who come to party and hit the slopes, so I suspect the rooms get a lot of damage from this (drinking and snow gear). The beds were clean and comfortable and the heating was good. The included breakfast was good, it's provided by a couple who own a restaurant in the compound. They were really nice. They work pretty hard when there are a lot of guests eating, so it's best to come early or wait till the rush is over. The Shakespeare a good choice if you want easy access to Hakuba's main attractions.

Awesome location, situated very close to the Hakuba Base Camp stop and in the middle of most restaurants. Bed was slightly uncomfortable, I think mainly because the mattress hung over the bed frame... Didn't eat breakfast at the hotel, can't comment there. Staff was super friendly, super helpful. Rooms were clean and big enough. Enjoyed the stay and would return!

Shakespeare Hakuba
Great stay. The front desk had quick communication by email, spoke excellent English, and the shuttle service was excellent, even giving us a lift to the Onsen halfway through our stay. The location was as central as you can get in Echoland, right in the heart of the action and across the road from Hakuba Base Camp bus terminal. That being said, there is a bar out the front which was never an issue until Saturday night when there was a little bit of noise. The room was a decent size by Japanese standards, typical small basic bathroom but everything was clean. The bed was two singles or king singles pushed together, and we could feel the join in the middle. We had a mountain view room and the view to the mountains was beautiful. The building itself is very nice in an old English thatched roof style, and has food, massage and yoga facilities onsite, along with a well setup drying room. Side note about the area: Echoland has no ATM, the closest is in Happo about 15 minutes walk away. This is also where the closest slopes are, or short bus ride or taxi away. There are lots of places to eat but reservations are recommended.

Great location
Check in was easy, hotel is in a great location - close to lots of bars, restaurants and a central transport hub for the ski resorts!

Well I owe the staff an apology. I left a not so great review because of the bed and pillows... The first night I did not sleep well because the mattress was way to hard for me. After I let the front desk know they told Olivia. She mostly manages the property. She went WAY above and beyond remedying the situation. She actually went and bought two pillows that were to the specifications I usually like AND she got a memory foam bed topper!!!!! Seriously amazing person and service. I feel like I’m a guest in her house. I also had a chance to explore the neighborhood and it has really great restaurants and stores close by. Another thing Olivia organized was a free car ride to a beautiful Onsen and pick up. I feel beyond pampered. At first the look of the hotel was a bit dated but the Aloha she gives and the homey atmosphere is really wonderful. I’m I’m lucky enough I will be back.

Many restaurants nearby the hotel but all are full in at night, we have to book it 1 day in advance to have seat. The hotel has only 1 staff in the morning, no elevator, check out early in the morning, so i have to carry my luggage from the 3rd to the lobby by myself.

Good hotel
The Shakespeare Hotel is a good hotel with friendly, very helpful staff and close to several restaurants, bars and cafès. It was probably a little over priced for the condition of the hotel (or was when I stayed there in the high season - February - everywhere was expensive). The rooms are basic but there were stains on the carpets and furniture. If you are just there to ski or be outside in beautiful Hakuba and won’t be spending much time in your room, it’s a good, reasonably priced hotel compared to other hotels. The location is pretty far from the ski field. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk or there are hourly shuttles from he “base camp” which is very close by. There are restaurants, bars and cafès in the area which is convenient.

Great location and has the potential to be a fantastic venue. The hotel needs a complete over haul. It has serious problems with plumbing and the smell in the entrance and throughout the hotel is awful and be a deterant for most people. A drop in bathroom although shower is a good one. Rooms not cleaned everyday and you need to submit ticket to have cleaned. Staff are friendly and helpful in the area and the logistics with skis and area etc.

Skiing holiday
Several staff spoke excellent English, they had an Australian chef that did breakfast on week days, and a Japanese chef on weekends. If you wanted to hire gear we were picked up from the hotel to get fitted out. The rooms were a good size, and warm.

Too hot!
The room temperature was centrally controlled, so you could only have low, medium or high fan for heat. As such, the room was way too hot no matter what setting you put it on. The beds only had one doona cover and no sheets, so you were sweaty at night but couldn’t cover yourself with anything because the doona was so heavy. The windows didn’t shut properly and would always open by themselves. The shower temperature was awful, fine one minute and then scalding the next. Showering was a scary experience. The front foyer of the hotel smelt like sewage mixed with incense! I wouldn’t recommend this hotel unless you like being across the road from the pub!

Short stay
We stayed here for 5 nights. I would only recommend this hotel for its location. Right on the Main Street in Echo Land, so close to restaurants and rentals. It was also right next to the bus shuttle. You only receive one key, which is attached to a huge key ring - not ideal when all you take boarding is your jacket which is filled with other essentials. You have to request for a room clean which is fine, except when you expect your dirty cups to be replaced and an actual clean to happen. If you need your boots, gloves etc to be dried, I suggest using your own room and not the “drying” room. Laundry facilities only consist of one washer and one dryer - so that’s playing on luck there. Breakfast is buffet style and was okay if you like your hot food cold. It was included so you either take it or leave it. I am sure there are other places in Echoland that can provide a better stay.

I had a great experience at the Shakespeare hotel. The hotel is located about a mile from the Hakuba Happo One bus terminal and Happo One gondola, but you can walk it, take a shuttle, or request a lift from the hotel staff if they are free and up to it! Although I stayed at a busy time (NYE), the hotel staff was still making every effort to ensure I had a good stay. I wanted to specifically thank Jake for being so hospitable and helping us with our every request. He was a pleasure to see any time we went to the lobby. Jake

Over and Beyond
We recently spent 4 days at Shakespeare on our honeymoon. My wife and I were overwhelmed by the effort made by Olivia and all her staff to make sure we had the best stay possible. Nothing was too much and the personalised service and advice was excellent. One day we will hopefully return to Japan, Hakuba, and will most definitely be residing here.

Great location and outstanding service!
The service was outstanding. The front desk is english speaking which helped us a lot. They came and picked us up from the hakuba bus stop. It is also 10 - 15 min drive to the slopes which is very convenient. They were extremely helpful in booking a cab and giving us recommendations. The rooms were really clean - small but cozy and comfortable and the heating system was perfect. Even though the hotel doesn't have the best ambience it is located in echo land which has great bars and cafes where you can hang out after a day of skiing/snowboarding. Definitely worth staying here.

Renovated rooms, new yoga studio with great Yoga instructors... 5 diners in the hotel complex, an organic food shop and also a massage place. shuttle bus to ski resorts right in front of the hotel... I bet its hard to diffrentiate through rooms and service in Hakuba but location... and what's around your hotel matters... It's based in Echoland where all the bars are... so it had to the convinient access to the ski slopes, convinience of a large scale hotel (diners, massage, yoga studio) but also get a feel of the local streets.. perfect for first time Hakuba visitors.

Shuttle busses bring you free of charge to all the slopes. The hotel has drying room and is walking distance to equipment leasing.

I really enjoyed my stay - but I would have appreciated better heating. The heating was only switched on in the evening which meant the rooms took time to warm up. Thi made the nights warm when it is better for sleeping and the days chilly and not that pleasant. I am sorry to give this negative report for the stay because it is a charming hotel - but the owner should remember that sometimes guest will come from very hot countries and the temperature contrast in Hakuba will be extreme. Proper heating is appreciated.

すごく親切。でも寒い。
フロントの方はすごく丁寧、親切です。 ただホテル自体が古いのか、証明が暗い。そして 暖房があまりきかない。この2点が残念でした。 それ以外は家族4人でゆっくりはできました。 ありがとうございました!

立地は申し分ないです。外食、テイクアウトなど沢山あります。部屋は清掃が不十分で前泊者の物やゴミが落ちていました。壁が薄く隣りの部屋がうるさいと眠れませんがフロントは19時までなので対応してもらえず我慢しました。客層はほぼ中東やアジア系の方がほとんどで日本人はあまり見かけませんでした。フロントもアジア系の外国の方です。 暖房があまり効かず寒かったです。
