Visit a group of museums dedicated to everything from art and architecture to communication, film and sculpture at this riverside cultural district.

The Museumsufer (Museum Embankment) is a varied collection of art galleries and museums within walking distance of Frankfurt’s Old Town. Browse masterpieces by Old Masters, sculptures from ancient Greece and icons from the 15th to 20th centuries. Learn about the evolution of filmmaking and the cultural heritage of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region. The museums of the Museumsufer line both banks of the Main River.

One of the galleries in the collection is the Städel Museum. It traces 700 years of artworks by Botticelli, Monet, Picasso, Rembrandt and other revered artists. Examine sculptures from ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian periods in addition to the medieval and Renaissance eras at the Liebieghaus. The Museum Giersch explores the art history of the Rhine-Main region.

At the German Film Museum discover how cinematography has developed since its 19th-century beginnings. See scale models of notable landmarks, such as the Forum of Pompeii, London’s Crystal Palace and Frankfurt’s Main Tower, at the German Museum of Architecture. Look at displays of communication tools, including letters, telegraphs and modern-day media, at the Museum of Communication.

Find thousands of ethnological artifacts from Africa, Oceania, Southeast Asia and the Americas at the Museum of World Cultures. The Museum of Applied Arts puts on rotating exhibitions that focus on evolving living conditions. Understand the artistic and ritual purpose of Christian Orthodox icons at the Icon Museum.

On Saturdays the district’s main street, Schaumainkai, is taken over by the Museumsufer Flea Market. Browse through the many stands for antiques, collectible items, handicrafts and second-hand goods. Peruse arts and crafts stalls, enjoy live music and sample local cuisine during August’s Museumsufer Embankment Festival.

The Museumsufer is about a 15-minute walk from the heart of Frankfurt’s Old Town. Trams stop nearby and the Schweizer Platz U-Bahn station is less than 10 minutes away by foot. The opening hours and admission fees of each attraction vary. Purchase a Museumsufer ticket to access more than 30 museums. Admission is free to many city museums on the last Saturday of the month.
