Get insights into hundreds of years of Toulon's maritime history at the Musée National de la Marine. The museum is inside a former arsenal that dates back to 1738. Today it houses models of historic vessels, maritime artifacts and paintings inspired by the sea and naval exploits.

Study the collection of large and small-scale model craft that includes copies of square-rigged ships from the 19th century. View exhibits that explore World War II sea battles and that chart the development of the French Navy. See the collection of old canons and other weapons. Among the other artifacts you can see are rudders, figureheads, bells, gauges and timepieces.
Visit the exhibition space dedicated to the 17th-century military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. He revolutionized fortification designs under King Louis XIV. Go to the area devoted to the city’s former prison and walk through the re-creation of its hospital ward.

The Musée National de la Marine is open every day except Tuesday, May 1 and Christmas Day. During the peak summer period of July and August it is open every day. It is closed through January. Admission charges apply and there are discounts for children.
The museum is situated at the entrance to the naval port, just south of Toulon’s city centre and is easy to get to. Take a bus to the centre and then walk for a couple of minutes. There is also metered parking in Place d'Armes and Freedom Square. Among the attractions near to the museum are Saint-Louis Church, the Romain Bouteille Theatre and numerous restaurants and bars.
