The Sofitel is a certainly stunningly luxurious hotel. However, one gets the sense that they are trying too hard. All the ornamentation actually gets in the way of practicality. For instance, the bathroom is enclosed in frosted glass, which looks rather impressive, but the glass walls are not vertical, which means you can easily hit your head, especially at night. Also, the grand sofa is so overloaded with pillows that you have to clear some space before anybody can sit down. This gives the whole room the feel of an exhibit that one should not touch. As a result, the hotel is rather unsuitable for families with young children. On the other hand, couples on a romantic getaway might find it rather charming.
The same over-the-top approach applies to the staff. They are all extremely forthcoming to the point of being in your face, and often there is some upselling involved.
