Pocket Guide: Sicily Mount Etna Hotels

Wherever you travel in the Catania region, you’re likely to see the smouldering peak of Mount Etna in the distance. It’s Europe’s tallest active volcano, and its countless eruptions over the centuries have shaped eastern Sicily’s landscapes in dramatic fashion.

How to Visit Mount Etna

Buses go from Catania to the Hotel Rifugio Sapienza on the southern side, from where you can take the cable car and then a minibus to just below the main crater. If you want a proper hike, it takes about four hours to walk from the hotel. If you want a much shorter walk, you can pass on the minibus and walk directly from the cable car station.

Cars are able to go up the mountain, so you can also drive on the northern side from Linguaglossa to Piano Provenzana, taking in spectacular scenery along the way. However you reach Mount Etna, prepare to be blown away by its bizarre landscape. Dress warmly and wear proper boots, as the snow lingers well into late spring. In fact, you can go skiing on the volcano’s slopes from November till April.

Where to Stay around Mount Etna

You can choose to stay on the slopes of Mount Etna itself if you fancy doing some serious exploring of the volcano and the national park – or if you want sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and the sea on clear days. Other hotels are closer to sea level, ranging from cosy B&Bs to grander hotels with outdoor pools and spas – as well as mesmerising views of the volcano.

Where to Eat in Mount Etna

Thanks to Mount Etna’s volcanic activity, the soil in the national park is exceptionally rich. Not surprisingly, the region has a good number of farms on the slopes of the volcano – and many owners run farmhouse restaurants offering their own home-grown produce. It’s one of the best ways to get a true flavour of Sicily.

For something less rustic, check out the restaurants of the upmarket hotels in the region, where the views of Mount Etna will be as gorgeous as the cuisine.
