Big let down

Posted 14-Aug-2017
Pros: Lobby, bar, location.
Cons: Air conditioning. Better windows and door seals to reduce road noise.
Location: Walking distance to wharf. We preferd nearby Carmel.
The hotel is in the midst of major renovations and they were setting up for Car Week at the time of our visit. To my surprise the room was not air conditioned. So with all the construction noise you couldn't have the room windows open. Speaking of the windows....I guess in warm climates they don't bother paying for quality doors and windows. The single pane glass and poor patio door seals exacerbated the noise issues. We had a room overlooking the pool and a busy road. We had to leave the windows closed and still struggled to sleep due to the road noise. The hotel lobby is beautiful and the location good. The staff did apologize and reduced our rate but unfortunately this was the worst stay of our holiday.

Un-accommodating.

Posted 11-Aug-2017
Hotel was noisy. Asked for another room, didn't get one. Asked for a late check out due to traveling with an elderly parent that needed more time in the morning. They wouldn't accomodate. Electronic key failed to work twice, and had to goto the desk to fix. Concierge was less than friendly when I asked for an extra map of the area (misplaced the one I got at check-in). Bottled water was $5per bottle.

Excellent Location!

Posted 08-Aug-2017
Pros: the lobby area with the trees and the friendly staff
Cons: the carpet in the hallways appears dated and worn
Location: Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, biking, kayaking
My husband and I stayed here for our 25th wedding anniversary, arriving around 10:30 pm after two flights. I had arranged with the concierge to have a bottle of wine and a fruit and cheese plate waiting on our room on arrival, which we got to enjoy outside on our balcony. The lobby is beautiful with live trees throughout, and the room was clean and comfortable. The hotel is right by Fisherman's Wharf and the bike/pedestrian path along the water. Cannery Row is walkable, but I preferred biking there. We were able to rent bikes at Adventures by the Sea right there at the Portola. We had an excellent stay, but the pool and hot tub had lots of active children jumping in and out, and we wanted more of a romantic scene instead of a family one. If you have children, however, both you and they would absolutely love it! Upon check-in, children receive a "pirate" bag, with some sort of questions or clues that take them all over the hotel on an adventure. WE loved it and would definitely stay again.

Birthday Getaway

Hotel is perfectly placed in Downtown Monterey. 2 minute walk to Wharf & a beautiful 20 min stroll along the coast to Cannery Row/Aquarium. Clean room & warm cookies at front desk everyday. Use parking garage across street ($7/day to $ave) will come back next time in Monterey

Beautiful and very hotel with the nicest employees

Posted 24-Jul-2017
Pros: Everything...
Cons: Nothing.
Location: Monterey is beautiful and close to Carmel and 17 mile drive. Best part of our trip down the coast...
Loved the Keurig coffee maker in room. The staff was very helpful and even pulled up routes when we left. Very accomodating!

Pros: Great stay
Cons: Free rooms?
Location: Great location
Great time, I lived down there from 1965 to 1983, Carmel, Pebble Beach and left Carmel Valley in 1983, its changed a lot, to many people and the traffic is horrific, but I had a great time playing tourist, good food, good walks but only after the car was parked. Overall a great experience.

nickel and dime

Posted 23-Jul-2017
Pros: Location
Cons: Looking out for their customers, better coffee stands in room, better food
Location: right by fisherman's wharf where there are a number of good restaurants
this hotel charges $20 to park your car in their garage. You can park for $7 across the street. For a relatively expensive hotel they did not look out for their guests, the rooms and amenities were mediocre, and the extra charges were steep.

Nice hotel in walking distance to lots of sights

Posted 23-Jul-2017
nice hotel with a updated lobby and very good restaurant. the rooms are clean and well equipped with coffee maker and fridge. unfortunately, they were not able to provide a kettle. from the hotel, you can walk to downtown, fishermans wharf and even the aquarium.
