Fattoria degli Usignoli is exactly how I had pictured a Tuscan hotel. The grounds were beautiful, and a perfect place to relax. We visited in April so it was quiet except for the workers bustling about getting ready for the tourist season. The owner was accommodating, but quite reserved. The rest of the staff were extremely friendly, especially the girl who served the breakfast area by herself and also helped in the restaurant at night.
The breakfast buffet was substantial. In addition to the typical Italian breakfast of a croissant and coffee (which was served with hot, steamed milk in a separate pitcher) were plates of prosciutto cotto, salumi and cheese as well as hard boiled eggs, breads, yogurt, canned fruits, cereal, juice and milk. Nothing exotic, but tasty.
The hotel's restaurant is adequate with a nice atmosphere, but not the best food we had in Italy by any means. However, not many other restaurant options close by. Pastas are probably a better choice than sides or main dishes. Gnocci with leeks and pasta with mushrooms were both good. Ribeye steak came sliced over arugula. Flavor was good, but the quality of the meat was not.
Our issue with this hotel was finding it after dark. Directions on Google are not the same way the hotel recommends from Florence. After describing where we were, a staff member kindly came to get us in a nearby church parking lot.
I would go back now knowing how to get there, but most importantly would make sure my GPS was working!
"Nice hotel and a good base for visiting Tuscany. "
Nice hotel, room was ok but our tv wouldn't work which isn't the end of the world but it would have been better if it had. Breakfast was basic to say the least. One cup of coffee only, and a poor selection of pastries and bread rolls. Not even any cheese or ham. I've been to Italy a lot and that was poor in comparison. The swimming pool was fantastic. There is an on site restaurant but we didn't use it for evening meals as we went out.
The room we stayed was filled with IKEA style furniture and clean.
The people were very friendly and spoke good English and helped book Uffizi and Accademia reservations.
The hotel is located south of Florence directly next to an E35 exit. Very easy to get access to all the major roads including the ones to Florence, Sienna, Pisa and Rome.
One needs to have a car as we did for Tuscany area tour.
There are laundry and COOP supermarket for daily routines within driven distances.
Everything was awesome (we got a nice upgrade for our Anniversary). Excellent old time Villa with the Renaissance feel that we wanted. Absolutely beautiful and the staff was great - especially Thomas. If you have a rental car there are plenty of things to do within a 2 hour drive (we went to Pisa and San Gimignano). The food was awesome and the wait staff was great (even though the hotel was very full). We will definitely come back and wished we would have spent our entire trip at this location.
Well, this hotel is clean and modern, simply decorated as pictures. We booked a suite but were disappointed not to have a balcony or terrace in the sun. There was a table and chairs at the door but this was not a sun terrace or place that you would want to sit of an evening with your glass of chianti! Breakfast was nice, lunch was huge and there is no evening meals on offer. pool was decent.
The self catering facility was very simple... 2 ring hob, fridge and plates and cutlery. No washing machine or clothes drying facility. I personally like to be able to hang my beach towels and swimwear out to dry. Sadly we could only drape over chairs! Bedroom was spacious with large wardrobe but there was no drawers or shelves so we had to leave small stuff in suitcases. Also there was safe in room.
The staff were helpful in recommending restaurants but unfortunately we couldn't find any locally. Beware if travelling with children - restaurants only open 19.30 onwards (if at all!) Considering it is peak season half of italy was shut... very strange... August was not a good time to visit. We were amazed that Tuscany was so un-touristy... very quiet... but that's a good thing!
We have just stayed at this b&b and enjoyed it very much (despite all the rain) the room was the best we stayed in throughout Italy and Alessandro the owner/host was so friendly and helpful. When we paid the bill at the end, my fiancee and I looked at each other as if to say is this enough and had to check our booking. This place is excellent value for money and we would have no problem recommending it. The train station is very close by and offers free parking so getting into florence is very easy and cheap.

Villa Grassina is a beautiful property situated high in the hills on a very steep narrow dirt road that is not known to GPS but well worth the effort to find. We spent 5 days touring around Tuscany and Florence on day trips and this was the perfect place to return to each evening to relax.
Montagna Fiorentina sits along the valleys of the Comano and Sieve rivers. Vineyards and olive groves populate the hilly part of the region, while mountains and forests make up the territory's southern and northern parts.
