The Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos is a green park and observation deck a short walk north from the majestic castle known as the Alcázar de Segovia. The viewing deck lies on a pleasant meadow and provides an excellent vista of the castle and its surrounding trees from below. Gaze up at the golden turrets and towers and crenellated walls of the medieval fortress. Notice that its shape is a bit like the bow of a ship.
Stroll through this serene park and enjoy the views of the fortress above. Snap photos of the pointy castle, with an array of trees flanking it. Visit the San Marcos Church at the back of the park. Lay down a blanket on the green meadow in the woodland shade.
Walking paths in the park lead to trails through the forest, which acts as a serene and natural contrast to the busy urbanity of the city of Segovia. Spot the stork nests in the trees and stroll along the banks of the Eresma River. Closer to the castle, look for the Monument to the Heroes of May 2, which commemorates the Madrid uprising of 1808.
Explore the maze-like cobbled alleys of Segovia’s exceptional historic centre. Walk to the castle itself and take an audio-guided tour of its halls and chambers. Inspect the trinkets and artifacts in the Armoury Room, appreciate the majesty of the Throne Room and see the unusual ceiling in the Pinecone Room.
The Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos is on the Eresma River in the northwestern hills of Segovia. Get around this part of the city on foot. You can also drive and leave your car in the viewpoint’s designated parking lot. See nearby sights, such as the Vera Cruz Church, the Poets Gardens and the Royal Mint Museum of Segovia.
