"Friendly and attentive service"
I had a wonderful stay at the 414 hotel from the moment I walked in through the door. I've never stayed at a hotel with such friendly and attentive staff. They immediately made me feel at home and were considerate of all requests. The room was spacious for New York and I had all that I needed. The quaint brownstone building made it feel as though I was staying with a friend. I found the location convenient with plenty of restaurants in walking distance and Times Square a short walk away. All in all, it was a great stay and I will definitely be back!

"Nice place for a very reasonable price"
This hotel is within reasonable walking distance of many major New York city landmarks, Times Square, Rockefeller Center and the Manhattan Cruise Pier. We stayed one night in February so didn't get to enjoy the roof top pool but it did look very spacious though the widow. The lobby was very modern, the room was extremely clean and so were the hallways and elevators. The staff were very friendly and helpful with directions to some of the sites as well as some good suggestions about where to eat. The price was very modest for staying in Manhattan and we'll definitely stay there again on our next visit to New York.

"Out"
Had a good time. My stay was comfortable. My only issue was that Expedia was promoting $50/night rooms, and that's what I signed up to. But to my surprise, I found out that these promo rooms were or private bedrooms but shared with two other hotel guests. I had to pay a full price to be able to stay.

"Good choice for midtown "
Pleasantly surprised by this hotel. Parking is directly next to hotel entrance (pay at hotel desk). Spacious room by NYC standards. Clean, a bit dated. Climate control in our room was the only issue, but only an annoyance. Also, you can definitely hear your neighbors. Overall a good affordable pick on the west side. We will stay again.

"Small, but sufficient space"
While conveniently located within walking distance to times square, I didn't realize how tired I would be after exploring all day, and I would have preferred to stay closer to the train station. The hotel room itself is small, and had a funky smell when we arrived, but we left the windows open all day and the fan running while exploring and by the time we came back the smell was gone.

"Great location and ample room"
I was very pleasantly surprised once I saw the room: 313 square feet of space, a few blocks from Columbus Circle, for such a reasonable rate is simply remarkable! The room had a comfortable king-sized bed, was tastefully decorated with sleek, contemporary furniture and offered all the standard amenities, including a hair dryer, full-size mirror, nice soaps, and a full-size ironing board. The desk was very comfortable and well lit, with a proper ergonomic chair. I had an ADA-accessible bathroom, which was enormous for NYC! The room was impeccable, quiet, and welcoming. The rest of the hotel, however, is in need of redecoration. The lobby is unattractive and the color scheme was unfortunate. The hallways and elevators are also in need of an update to match the contemporary decor of the rooms; the carpets, in particular, should be replaced. The hotel just transitioned from its former life as a Holiday Inn and the common areas reflect this old fashioned identity. I found the menus overpriced and, given the many choices nearby, I enjoyed breakfast across the street instead. The staff was supremely courteous, attentive, and professional--and I appreciated the nice touch of a little box of chocolate truffles as a welcome gift. I stay overnight in Manhattan at least twice a month and intend to make the Watson Hotel my new home away from home. Excellent value!

Pocket Guide: New York Midtown West Independent Hotels

Some of NYC’s best-known landmarks are north of 14th and south of 59th—or Midtown Manhattan. Its western half is home to Manhattan's largest venues: the Javits Center and Madison Square Garden. In the Garment District, designers try to stay a cut above fashion's latest trends. Nearby, Hell's Kitchen is hot thanks to Restaurant Row. In one block on West 46th, diners can dash from Bangkok to Brazil.
