It Worked
It served as a safe harbor with a bed. That's all we were looing for. Hotels.com had the wrong address, so we had to call the hostel to find the location. A little less than we expected in terms of number of showers and toilets. Staff was friendly, and we met other travelers. Some tiny ants in the room near any food left outside the fridge.

Hostel City Maui 1 is closed. It lookded like a dump from the outside. My reservation was transfered to Hostel City 2 Maui and that was good.

Room 8'x14', no chair, toilet not anchored to floor, mattres smells urine, room dirty, cocroaches, a slum for 100$ US for the night. Erase that "hotel" from your list if you don't want to loose your name.

Nice for a supe cheap one night stay if you're not planning on staying in the room much! Fan was broken and there wasn't a bathroom door but it wasn't terrible!

Absolutely awful! The room smelled like urine and the caretakers were screaming at each other outside our window! We left after 2hrs and booked into a different hotel!

Misleading
The pictures on the website are very misleading and staged. The room had major paint peeling, bed was uncomfortable, thin sheets,pillow shams instead of cases( Who knows when these were washed) had to ask for towels, forgot to make coffee on cont breakfast. I'm on Maui for business every three months and this is definitely a place I'm crossing off my list

most disgusting room I have been in
1) we got the night before an email letting us know that the room was canceled from the hotel side, 2) It took us that night 1,5 h to reach the Hostel and they fixed it When we arrived everything was very relaxed but unfortunately the cleaning of the room, too. Bath: No extra toilet paper, full garbage cans from the visitors before, leaking shower with a wet towel in front of it, only one temperature for the water, extra turn off at the shower head (other didn't work), with foam fixed wall corner, moldy wood Bedroom: missing window part in the bedroom window Kitchen: The coffee was set up, but the oversaw that the garbage can was overflowing (with the empty coffee bad on top), and the overall was very dirty

A place to lay my head
I missed my plane and didn't want to spend a couple hundred dollars to rest my head so I took a chance. The room sucked but I expected that. I really wanted to take a shower but there was a dead coca roach in the bathroom area and something I could not describe in the shower so I passed on the shower and fell asleep. It was quiet although I may have been the only one there. The dude at the front desk was very sweet.

Not the Taj Mahal but it is clean and affordable.
I recently stayed at the Hostel City Maui when coming to meet family. Although it is not a 4 star hotel, but it is clean. It is an old, basic motel in the center of Kahalui. I had a private room with a bath. Although the room was clean, don't expect any amenities ie. shampooo, soap, desk, chair, or cable tv. There is a tv in the room that plays dvds (bring your own). There is good free wifi, a continental breakfast that comes with your room and a kitchen area so you may cook your own food is you like. This was the cheapest room in Maui $95 (tax included) and you get what you pay for. This island is over rated for what it is. Yes the island is green, because tourist bring their money here.

I needed a place at the last minute near the airport. It will do in a pinch. The rooms are small. The bed was not very comfortable, but was clean. The staff was nice. It felt a little sketchy.The price is a bit much for the condition of the hotel, but you do have access to a kitchen and a basic continental breakfast.

What staff? There was no one there to check me in when I got there at three in the afternoon. It was a scary looking place and I decided immediately that I would not stay. The door was locked with a sign saying that they would return at two, but no one was there at three.

an older facility that is an economic alternative
for a budget minded single student or traveling budget minded couple this place is an affordable alternative on a relatively expensive touristy tropical island. Although the facilities are dated, not new that is. a short stay will be pleasant because of the amicable staff, and all the money you will save to explore the island. Near to the only airport OGG is an advantage.

Basic, relatively cheap room
If you want a cheap (by Maui standards) room with bed and shower this will get the job done. Kitchen access (BYO groceries) and a basic breakfast that gives you enough to start the day. Check the map as it is a little difficult to spot the exact spot when driving.

Owners very nice and kind, room and towels clean, but the room was very small, no air conditioning and the neighborhood don't like it. I want to add that while we were there nights were quiet

Aloha and thank you for your review. In reference to not having air condition it was never an available amenity. The neighborhood that we are located is walking distance to the public transportation, coffee shop, little local business and eateries.

A monumental disappointment.
Beyond third world facility and a monumental waste of time. The facility was right next to the projects with bums and questionable looking characters wandering around. If you sat on the end of the bed it would become unstable. The structure of the building was made of wood and was in a very poor condition of disrepair and upkeep. The wooden flooring just outside of the shower was water logged and decayed to the point that a hole was formed and given time, someone could fall through to the ground floor (the room was located on the second floor). The shower dripped all night with an irritating and audible sound. No air condition, television, internet and the portable fan in the room was dirty. The toilet was separated from the bedroom only by a cloth screen. The room needed painting and the vinyl flooring tiles needed replacing. Some of the electrical outlets did not work and the one right next to the "bathroom" faucet was not code rated GFCI, the entrance/exit door was rickety and did not close flush. For a price of $94 per night, one would expect the basics. As a person who has travelled to many countries all over the world (including third world countries in the Caribbean, central and south America) for various reasons, this is the worst hotel I have seen and is beyond anyone's wildest imagination - more so in the US. I do not see how the City & Council inspectors would even allow a place like this to exist. For the second floor, there is only one means of access/egress.

Very dirty. Full of cockroaches.
My room had a lot of ants and cockroaches. The bathroom light was not working, and the cold faucet knob on the sink was broken so I could only use hot water. So cramped and the TV did not have cable. Nothing was supplied - not even towels and the toilet paper was so little.

we have hired a new cleaning staff also mention upon sign in if you are not happy to come down to the office so we can change your room or possibly make it right. However the pictures do not lie. All pictures show the size of the cozy room and yes it is small but all you need it for in a HOSTEL is to sleep and shower. Maybe next time let us know then we could have done something to make you happy

Not worth the money what so ever
The staff were never around when you needed them. There was only one tap in the shower and the temperature would go from freezing cold to scorching hot and back again thoughout the whole shower, there was no spare toilet rolls. There was a sign in the laundry that said "hostel Laundry time are from 7am-2pm" yet every time I wanted to do laundry (at 9pm) they would always be doing hostel laundry. The hostel is right next door to the government commission housing and some of our stuff got stolen out of the back of our car. The also tried to charge me twice for one night because the kid didn't enter it into the system when I paid him. There were bugs In our room too. The only good thing was the pillow wasn't half bad and the bed was pretty comfy although very noisey when you rolled over or got up.

I spent two nights. No hot water in the shower. Broken toilet seat. Noisy. Little room to park. Tiny room w/no chair or table. It did have okay breakfast and nearby restaurants.

If you have kids, don't go there!!
Not recommended, lots of noice. Only if you are alone and nothing else is available around. Just for sleep and go!!

Most HOSTELS do not allow kids but we do if you have to. These rooms are SMALL because it has its own private shower and toilet. But you are right i prefer NOT to have kids here but i wont turn someone away if they do

No hot water except the first night. All facilities are poorly maintained. Amenities are not provided. Breakfast is the same everyday--leftover from the day before, even coffee. Owners are nice people though, but they have to put themselves in the shoes of the customers. No housekeeping service for long-stay. Trash can is full after 2-3 days and customers have to take care of the trash.

More than suffices!
For what it is - a hostel - this place more than suffices. We merely needed a place to crash and shower the next day. Service was super friendly, the room was neat and tidy and they even provided complimentary continental breakfast. What more can you want from a hostel? Check your expectations, people! If you're looking to be pampered, go to the Ritz-Carlton. I've stayed in hostels not nearly as nice or run by a proprietor as friendly. Disregard the negative reviews. We would totally stay here again.

DO NO USE THEM, drive around there are better
I REALLY DONT RECOMMEND , the location to drive in was terrible, had BUG BEDS, and the shower didn't have hot water, I had to take a shower and i couldn't shut the water, we ask to change the room and at the other room the entrance door didn't lock, the over all looking made me fell like we wore in a very very very bad area of HAWAII , but it was ant the case. the front desk they wore never there, there is a $50 charge if u loose the key , I was trying to returned the key and was no sign where to drop the key..... HORRIBLE.

Never again.
I decided to rough it this trip to Maui and since there were no rooms under $300 a night I stayed at this Hostel. The room is very small, so small that there was only a shower curtain separating the toilet from the bed, which was literally less than a foot away from the toilet. You had to climb over the toilet to get to the shower so I decided to just bird bath it. I could smell the toilet the whole night. There are so many fire hazards going on in this room from a rusty power strip to latches on the door for safety that would make it hard to get out of the room in the event of an emergency. The bed seemed cushy enough but there was such a concave in the middle of the bed that I felt like I was sleeping in a bowl. No place to give back my keys in the morning so had to shove it through the hole in the office door. They charge u a key deposit so u don't take the key but then don't make it easy for u to return the key.

Friendly inexpensive hostel.
Great for a hostel to have private bathroom! Also enjoyed the shade trees and tables, chairs outside. Kitchen fully equipped. No bugs in the rooms. Remember - this is a hostel, not a 5 star resort! It is not on the beach and doesn't have a pool, duh! But it is quiet and homey.

Happy one night stay
We only stayed one night, and before we did we looked at other reviews. I'm not sure what happened with those other reviewers, but we had a great time. Keep in mind this is a hostel, not a hotel, and as far as hostels go, this was wonderful. I think the other reviewers went in thinking this was a hotel. Thank you for the stay! I'm sure we'll be back! :)

Dela was very helpful and friendly. We stayed here the first night we got into Maui. We slept well. There was no toilet paper in our bathroom :( King's restaurant next door had great food at a very reasonable price.

We stayed for 7 nights. First 2 nights we were in a room where we could barely turn around. I asked to be moved to room 15, as I had seen inside and it was bigger, and had a small refrigerator, which I needed for my insulin. No working smoke detector in the first room and the second room smoke detector didn't have a battery in it. My husband noted that the fire extinguisher said "Recharge". When I went to get my key deposit back I told the manager that the smoke detector in the room needed a battery, she seemed to not be listening, so I said, "Did you hear me?' She said she did, though I'm sure she already knew. The office people don't come in till 11AM, so if you need anything (like fresh towels) you better have gotten it the day before, and they leave as soon as everyone has arrived for check-in, so the time varies. There is a continental breakfast from 7-9AM, though there was only one pot of coffee made for 14 units. It was always gone by 7:30, there was no coffee available to make another pot and no one in the office, where they keep the coffee. So if you really need coffee buy some at Walmart so you can brew it at the Hostel. The headboard was not attached to the bed so the mattresses kept sliding around if you were trying to watch a movie. They have a TV in the room, but no service, they have a DVD player with it and an assortment of movies in the office. The shower had a constant and loud drip, we put a piece of fruit under it to dull the noise.

Spent most of my time sightseeing or otherwise away. The worst problem was no place to sit. Also the shower was not very good. Soap kept falling off the place made for it. The manager was friendly and helpful.

Good value for the low price
My room with bunk beds was o.k. considering the low price. The bunk beds didn't have two sheets each so I took one of the sheets from the other bed so I would have a clean sheet under me and over me.

That was a horrible experience, dirty, full of ants and mosquitos, room was cold. I got cold and many bites on my leg. Remove this hotel from your list, brings u bad reputation.

Mixed first impression
Location kind of hidden. Decent night lighting outside hostel. Multiple security cameras in plain site. Room very small! Bed was somewhat comfortable. Shower floor pretty bad. I don't think I'd stay there again.
