Pocket Guide: Lucea

A coastal town in the north of Jamaica, Lucea sits to the west of the popular resort of Montego Bay. Hugging a crescent-shaped coastline, Lucea is home to a handful of laidback resorts, and there are some more luxurious hotels, where the rich and famous stay.

Hit Lucea’s Beaches

Lucea’s jewels are its idyllic beaches with powdery white sand and shady palms. Some of the beaches belong to Lucea’s all-inclusive resorts and charge a small fee for entry, while others are free.

Sunset Cove Beach is one of Lucea’s private ones and has pedalos, kayaks, banana boats and sailboats for rent.

Lucea’s main public beach may be better if you’re on a budget and is a great spot to hang out with the locals and try out some classic jerk chicken joints.

Visit Lucea Town

Away from the beaches and the resorts, head inland to see Lucea’s charming old town centre, filled with pretty Caribbean architecture.

Close to the edge of town is Fort Charlotte, built in 1761 to protect the area from invasions, and in the centre is the Old Lucea Courthouse, with its historic clock tower which actually meant to be sent to the Caribbean country of St Lucia.

On Saturdays, make your way to Lucea’s weekly market selling food, gifts and local handicrafts. For more good shopping, try the modern Midway Mall.

Lucea for Nature Lovers

Just outside of town, see the tropical Jamaican rainforest and no less than four waterfalls - Kemshot Falls, Dry Hill Falls, Paradise Falls and Mayfield Falls. Mayfield Falls is one of the best, with 21 individual cascades. It’s great for swimming, as it’s much less crowded that the most famous falls on the island – Dunn’s River Falls.

Things to Do near Lucea

Lucea sits between Montego Bay and Negril and is about a 20-minute drive to each, so you can enjoy many of their attractions, too. In Montego Bay, visit Doctor’s Cave Beach, one of the best on the island, and in Negril make sure you see the famous Seven Mile Beach and what has been one of the world’s best bars – Rick’s Cafe.
