Find Hotels in Lucca’s Historic Centre
The city of Lucca gives its name to the surrounding province, and one glance at the town’s picturesque historic centre shows why Lucca is the regional capital. Medieval churches sit alongside historic terracotta-roofed buildings that house characterful B&Bs, and the many pretty piazzas are focal points for Lucca’s range of hotels.
Take in the View from Lucca’s City Walls
Walking along the top of the Renaissance-era walls that circle the city of Lucca is a great way to start a trip and orientate yourself. Built back in the 17th century, the walls offer an impressive tree-lined vantage point for viewing the whole city, and even the mountains beyond. Trying to spot your hotel from up here is a favourite holiday activity in Lucca.
Hotels in Lucca near Culture and Cuisine
Lucca’s historic centre is sometimes called ‘the city of one hundred churches’ because of the many religious buildings here. Two of the most famous and architecturally striking are the Lucca Cathedral and the Church of San Michele in Foro, each near a significant square and a short walk from much of the accommodation in Lucca, from cheap guesthouses and B&Bs to upmarket boutique hotels in the historic centre.
You’ll find a good variety of restaurants near the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro – a plaza constructed in an oval shape to mimic the original Roman amphitheatre. Many of the restaurants and bars here have al fresco patios – perfect for watching one of the outdoor concerts that are held here in the summer.
Away from the main piazzas you can find a good range of accommodation with albergos and moderately priced three-stars, as well as grand four-star hotels spread across the historic centre of Lucca.

The historic centre is the place to go for shopping in Lucca. There are designer boutiques and jewellery stores lining the main shopping street, Via Fillungo, as well as weekly markets selling leather handbags and clothing. Choose a hotel here and you’ll be minutes from the nearest shopping opportunity. Be sure to pick up some local wine or handmade chocolates from one of Lucca’s delicatessens to take home, too.
