While Derry-Londonderry is a city, crammed full of historic sites and architectural heritage, that doesn’t mean for a minute that you can’t spend your time energetically participating in sports and outdoor pursuits just made for adrenalin junkies.
The range of hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs on offer are perfect places to flop down at the end of a busy day wearing yourself out. There will be a place to suit you, no matter what your budget, taste or requirement, whether it’s luxury you require or simply a comfortable bed to lay your weary head at night.
While neither of these is the most athletic of sports, there is plenty on hand in the Derry area. Golf courses include 18 holes, 9 holes and indoor floodlit driving ranges. Some hotels are actually located right next to their own courses.
For fishing, how about a 15 acre lake stocked with rainbow trout, where you can hire boats and rods for a day on or beside the water? There is sea angling too. You could take a three-hour mackerel fishing trip or even charter a boat for shark fishing in the summer season.
If you love horse riding then, as an example, there is a 70 acre horse farm near Derry where you can ride to your heart’s content, hacking through stunning countryside or taking in a few jumps in an indoor or an outdoor arena.
There are some great cycle routes in Derry, some just a few miles in length if you’re feeling lazy and some a whole day’s excursion, taking in the city and then quiet country roads towards the border towns through stunning rural scenery.
The choice is yours. Will it be kayaking or paintballing? Coasteering or gorge walking? Archery or rock climbing? It’s all available in the Derry area, close to your hotel. There’s a country park too, offering all sorts of watersports including the more unusual banana boating and pier jumping as well as sailing and canoeing.
Derry has a huge sports complex offering something for everyone, including swimming and indoor cycling, karate, aikido, ju-jitsu, aqua zumba, table tennis and circuit training.
If you’re feeling fit, or wanting to become fit, then why not take a trip to Derry? Stay in a comfortable hotel, guesthouse or B&B and make the most of the sport and adventure facilities, both indoors and outdoors, that are to be found in this bustling city in Northern Ireland.
