We held our wedding reception at this hotel 41 years ago and it's pleasing that very little has changed. Breakfast was excellent. The only disappointment was our bathroom which felt grubby - the rim underneath the toilet bowl was stained or hadn't been cleaned. The area around the shower base was dusty and the tiles around the hand sink similarly had splash marks and all the tiles could do with a polish. As at clean bathroom is a crucial part of feeling comfortable in a hotel it was a shame as everything else was very good.

Everything was a 10 out of 10, except the bed was a spring old bed. Amazing place though, and would stay there again and again.

We were greeted with a very unfortunate welcome from the concierge desk. On asking if the rooms we had booked have baths the concierge told me to go and look for myself. On checkout the same gentleman attempted to double charge us for breakfast (which was very sub- par).

Beautiful old property, shows it's age but as much as this adds character it also means you should expect wear and tear to show & steep narrow staircases. Staff were great, food not so much, limited options and quite bland. Bathroom taps were all very difficult to fully close, otherwise they drip and one of the windows wouldn't fully close, so the wind was blowing through on the upper floor. Surrounding areas beautiful, lots of country parks to explore, the main road is quite treacherous with endless speeding cars. Ok for a couple of nights of you need to be in the area, but nothing really convenient nearby and no facilities in the hotel

A most enjoyable stay
When we arrived in reception the duty staff member was very friendly and polite. We were given a free upgrade so that we had a little more space in the bedroom. Throughout the stay all staff encountered were very helpful and attentive to any needs we had.

Beautiful setting
The setting was wonderful. The hotel felt comfortable and the staff were lovely. Not being a modern purpose made hotel a little bit more signage may make navigation slightly easier but this is merely a suggestion and the character of the place was great. I travel to this area quite a lot and thought it would be lovely to use this hotel regularly when I do. However, the food prices would make me think twice. £19.99 per person for what sounds like a good breakfast isn't out of the ordinary and wouldn't be a deal breaker although we weren't offered the option of adding that on to our stay so ended up going elsewhere for this. We had eaten a main meal on our travels so my daughter just needed something light when we got there. Normally we would have picked up a sandwich to eat there, however, the hotel unfortunately operate a no "take away" policy so we felt we ought not. It cost us over £20 for her to have a sandwich and drink in the room. When we stay away we tend to arrive late and just need a small bite to eat before bed. For these stopover scenarios when people aren't making a weekend out of it and having a nice meal in the hotel restaurant it would be great to have a more flexible or cost effective option for eating. No doubt I would be a much more frequent visitor then. I hope my feedback will be useful.

Our trip fell during the heat wave. After 3 hot nights, the hotel upgraded us to a room with Aircon. The grounds are beautiful. The rooms are comfortable but in need of update. The staff are helpful.
