Stunning location

Posted 25-Oct-2016
Location: In middle of nowhere surrounded by beautiful countryside. Near Horsham town centre, Sussex Downs and South Coast.
Beautiful hotel in beautiful grounds. Stayed here to celebrate my husband's birthday. On arrival staff wished him a happy birthday and we were given a room upgrade. The room was spacious and spotlessly clean but on Sunday was not serviced until late afternoon. There is free wifi including a tablet in the room showing hotel facilities etc but also for Internet use by guests. On the downside it automatically switched on at 8 am shining a bright light into the room. Breakfast was disappointing. I would have expected waiter service in such a classy hotel but it was a buffet. The plates were cold and the food at best lukewarm. There was however plenty of choice. We dined in the Camelia Restaurent on Saturday night. Food was good but expensive. Service was very slow- the meal took 3 hours. There is a fitness room but not in hotel building and not well signposted. Hotel could be improved by addition of swimming pool and spa.

Went for my 65th birthday. Staff amazing and very attentive without being intrusive. Going again in July as we lived it so much.

Although the hotel is listed as a 5 star we felt that overall we had stayed at better 5* hotels. We feel the main aspect that let the hotel down was the level of service. We stayed on a Saturday night and there was a wedding going on. We appreciate the hotel was very busy but surely a 5* hotel could deal with this. There were dirty glasses left on tables in the late afternoon on Saturday/evening. Also, we felt that at dinner and when we were waiting in the bar it took too long for a waiter/waitress to come to us. My husband ordered a further glass of red wine with his meal which didn't arrive - little things like this all make a difference to your final impression of a place. We were placed in the main part of the hotel which is the older part. Although the room was very nice it was very warm (despite having a fan). You might like to request to be in one of the wings if you require a more modern room. Another point I noticed is quite a few of the staff didn’t look as presentable as I think they should for a 5* hotel (messy hair etc) I also noticed one of the girls skirts was ripped. Overall the hotel is very nice but I think it is far too much money for what you actually get.

Beautiful surroundings

Very enjoyable stay regardless of an uncomfortable night as the bed was very hard and the room very warm.

Lovely long weekend destination

We were staying in the South Lodge for a wedding and extended the stay to a long weekend - we stayed in the Stable block - the rooms were beautiful with amazing bathrooms. The staff couldn't be more helpful - can't wait to go back!

Not cheap but well worth a raid on the piggy bank!

An ideal relaxing meeting place to share a great meal and a drink or two with old friends. A justly highly rated venue. Only one minor gripe was that our friends were a bit put out by their large tub bath at the foot of the bed in "The Stable"!

The South Lodge is a relaxing place with finer service. Food was very well served and the signature restaurant The Pass is a step outside the typical Lodge experience. We enjoyed the grounds with a walk. The area is also full of promise with a short drive to many other attractions.

Luxurious way to spend our wedding anniversary

Posted 30-Mar-2015 on Hotels
We had dinner in the Camellia and lunch in The Pass - the food is superb and the staff are efficient, friendly and courteous. Our room overlooked the downs and was large and very comfortable. After diner we sat in the lounge listening to the piano player over a good glass of port. This is not our first visit to South Lodge and certainly wont be our last. We're already booked in again for June for my husband's birthday!
