The first purpose-built airport hotel in the world

Posted 03-May-2016
Pros: Architecture. Breakfasts. Nice staff.
Cons: The basics of checking that rooms are OK. There ought not to be problems for customers to complain about.
Location: On the A23 just outside Croydon. Croydon Airport museum is next door - open on first Sunday of each month.
We were staying at the hotel as part of a special-interest society AGM weekend. Inevitably the organisers were limited in the possible choices of venue, as it had to be able to cope with the numbers (about 60) and have a suitable room for the AGM meeting. The hotel is an attractive 1928 building, with top floor added later. Evening meals were set menus, with a choice of two or three dishes for each course. Good imaginative menu - possibly a bit pretentious - attractively plated but portion sizes quite small. Service a bit erratic - some tables were cleared before others served. Excellent breakfasts - lots of choice (except for the bread/rolls which were sub-standard). Problems with the room: three ceiling lights didn't work; plug stuck in bath so couldn't empty it; towels not put in room one night; shower dripping. All except the last sorted out promptly when we complained. Very pleasant east European staff, with genuine smiles! Our impression was that they were short-staffed for what they were trying to do.

Not 4* accommodation

Posted 30-Apr-2016
Do not have breakfast!! When food runs out it is generally not replaced. Went to breakfast an hour before the end and there were no sausages, bacon or scrambled eggs. On four occasions was told they will be replenished but never were Room had no hearing and was like an ice box No hot water in the morning 4*?? More like 1

Lacking in more ways than one.

Posted 28-Apr-2016
Very small room, very little supplies, poor bed linen, no ventilation and a broken shower mixer. Got upgraded to a different room which had the same characteristics but had no wardrobe, I had to hang my clothes on a hook that was attached to the wall, all because the rooms are so small. Shower was OK in the upgraded room. Booth rooms would steam up because of the lack of ventilation. Other than that OK.

Very noisy

Posted 16-Apr-2016
Was on the 7th floor with lift not working. Room was tried and in bad decor despite a 'recent' refurb. Room was at the front so very noisey. Breakfast was lovely although it would help if the staff spoke English

I had booked a de luxe room, which was on the seventh floor, when booking in, was told the lift was out of order, this was no good as my husband is disabled & unable to climb the stairs. They did offer an alternative room on the 1st floor, but this was claustrophobic, the bed wasn't made properly, eg, no fitted sheet or duvet, and the room smelt disgusting. Having said this, sofia & kasim were very helpful to us. We returned ho.e. Just a pity about the lift.

Sorry, but would try again.....

Posted 20-Feb-2016 on Hotels
Enjoyed our stay, but was disappointed with the room at first. The receptionist said our room wasn't ready. We were put in a small room, after paying for Execitive room was VERY disappointed, after complaining got moved to a far better room. Annoyed that the lift didn't work especially been on fourth floor (bit of a climb)then on first night, there was a water leak, so no shower in the morning, but managment did give us use of other room (2 floors down) I know it wasn't there fault, ut it did put a pamper on our stay......Sorry, but would give them a try again.
