I chose to stay here because of the hotel towers over the sea by the pier. The owners Brittannia could do so much to improve it. Apart from filling and painting rust ringed holes in walls whose fittings have been removed, it's the training of staff which might make most difference. Why is a VAT receipt not something which can be printed before 8am on Checkout morning? Why is there dirt which is not being cleaned in the bathrooms? Come on Brittannia, you owe it to the Grand to get it back to its glory days.

The Grand Hotel was probably very grand in its day, but today it is a shabby relic. All the furniture in the room was old, worn, scuffed and marked in some way. Well past their sell by date. The wall around the bed was stained and had various dents and holes. There was also something sticky on the wall that ended up on my pillow the first morning. Not very clean. The room had no alarm clock - but you don't need one. You are going to wake up at whatever time the people in the room above you get up, no ifs or buts, there is no sound insulation it seems. Same with the door to the room, you can hear every word spoken in the hallway. The plumbing also makes a thunder like sound as liquid passes down from the toilets in the rooms above. There is no control for the heating, which was out of control during my stay. The middle of January with the window open and it was still too warm. The worst though was being woken up at 5.30 by the hot water radiator auditioning for the role of drummer in a rock band. Staff were helpful and friendly though
