Pocket Guide: Shangfangcun Liwan Hotels

Pocket Guides: Guangzhou Liwan District

Guangzhou, the capital city of the Guangdong Province is a vibrant, modern metropolis and commercial centre home to some 13 million people. For a mash up of the city's modern skyscrapers and traditional Canton streets, visit the authentic Liwan District (once known as Xiguan) a charming area of the city which straddles the Pearl River Delta. Expedia offers a range of accommodation options from cheap hotels and hostels to high-end luxury apartments and international hotel chains.

Where to Stay, Shop or Dine out in Liwan

Liwan was originally an area where moneyed merchants set up home outside the city walls. Boasting colourful streets, bustling markets and street food stalls, it still has the real character of old Canton. Liwan is regarded as the birthplace of dim sum, and fans of these small savoury dumplings will find hundreds of excellent dim sum emporiums around Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street. Shopping is also well-regarded here in Guangzhou, where bargain hunters will find everything from quality jade jewellery and local ceramics to fashions, electronics and traditional Chinese medicines in Shangxiajiu's streets.

Where to Stay near Cultural Attractions in Liwan

A must-visit is Shamian Island, a sandbar island in the Pearl River Delta. Dating back to the Song and Qing dynasties, this charming colonial enclave is renowned for its ornate Western European-style mansions and buildings. At just 984 yards long and 328 yards wide, the island has broad traffic-free boulevards lined with riverfront cafes and bars, which can be a welcome respite from the 24/7 bustle of the city.

Take time out to explore the Hualin Buddhist temple, one of the oldest and most ornate temples in Guangzhou. The site dates back to 527 AD, and although the temple was rebuilt more recently, it's still a remarkable sight to see. Don't miss the 500 gold painted Buddhas in Arhat Hall.

It's easy to explore the rest of Guangzhou from Liwan, thanks to its well-connected transport system. There are three metro lines and good connections to Baiyun International Airport.

Whether you're looking for budget hostels or luxury hotels, let Expedia help find the best deal for your next Guangzhou trip.
