Good location, very helpful staff

Posted 20-Nov-2015
Pros: Location, staff, breakfast, parking.
Cons: Double glazing required
Hotel very well placed for the city centre, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the parking (at £10 per day) was very useful. However, it is situated on quite a busy road, and I was very surprised to find that it had single glazing in wooden sashes, which rattled loudly until I jammed some folded card between them (it was a very windy night), and the traffic noise way pretty loud in the morning.

Central Hotel and convenient for University

Posted 10-Nov-2015
Pros: Not a great deal other than convenience of location
Cons: Where can I start!
Location: Excellent location and the University and shps are all close.
Comfortable enough but facilities were rather dowdy and in need of upgrading. The bedroom was smaller than the adjacent en-suite bathroom! When we arrived two of the three central lights did not work; the hotel obliged by replacing them but this should have been done before we arrived. The food was fine and the dining room clean but rather dark. Parking secure at rear but costs £10/day.

Had a very good time there. Really liked the secure parking (extra £10 / day). Breakfast is excellent and staff are very friendly and helpful.

Good breakfast, poor wifi

Posted 19-Oct-2015
Pros: Breakfast food. friendly staff. Location.
Cons: Wifi and smoking policy
This hotel is well situated and the staff are friendly and helpful. There are two things that weren't good. The 'free hi speed wifi' rarely works. I was only there for two days and out most of the time but I had to ask them to reboot their server four times! Clearly it is a common problem. The other issue was smoking. Although the place is non smoking, they allow people to step outside the breakfast room and smoke on the little patio. This means that the breakfast room has a cold draught and smells of tobacco. Non smokers beware!

Vastly overpriced

Posted 28-Sep-2015
Pros: The location was good
Cons: Decor, shower, the room was far too hot in spite of the window being stuck open, a mirror in a place where it can be used together with the hairdryer
Location: Right next to the university so great for an open day, plenty of shopping and tourist sites in the city centre
Cramped, stuffy room, with single glazed windows overlooking a busy, noisy road. The sash window would not close properly leaving a good 1 inch gap at the bottom. Hotel staff were friendly but unable to rectify this. We had very little sleep as a result. The mirror was in such a position that it was impossible to see it while drying my hair. We really felt like we were slumming it but paying through the nose for the privilege. Will give Best Western a wide berth in future.

OK for the price

Posted 01-Sep-2015
The hotel is pokey and dated and there were some issues on check-in. Our room was not ready when we arrived at 4pm and we had to wait. When we were shown to the room it was set up as a double even though I had booked twin beds months earlier. We then had to leave again so the beds could be separated. When we returned we found the room was missing a phone, soap, shampoo and a bedside lamp. It also had only one bath towel and drinking glass though there were two of us. All these items were provided but it wasn't a very smooth or encouraging check-in. Staff were friendly and helpful but they all looked to be about 15 and seemed overwhelmed. Other guests were extremely noisy drinking and partying early Saturday night and we had to complain after putting up with it for 90 minutes. It was a bank holiday weekend so maybe noise is to be expected, however it did unfavourably reinforce the hostel-like impression. Staff were very responsive in dealing with the issue. In summary, a somewhat seedy atmosphere but the location is excellent.

Good neighbourhood dodgy front desk

Posted 21-Aug-2015 on Hotels
Rooms at front very noisy and small but in a great neighbourhood I had booked for 3 nights but had to cancel the third night which I did 48 hours ahead of time . The Hotel agreed to a refund and then made it as difficult as possible for the refund to happen .

Room was small. It was a single sized room with a double bed. Bed was right against wall/radiator. Only one bedside cabinet. Only single sized wardrobe. No room for chair. No room for two people.

Squeaky floors and bad water pressure

Posted 11-Aug-2015 on Hotels
The hotel is located in an old Victorian style building and the room I was staying in had very(!) squeaky floors! The bed however was sufficiently comfortable. The hotel is located next to an important road and cars and people pass the hotel regularly, earbuds are recommended! The bathroom had a sink with two taps one for cold and one for hot water, going with the buildings old nature. This made washing hands in slightly cold water necessary, to avoid the water from the very hot water tap. The shower had horrible water pressure! The water dribbled out of the shower head and there were only a fixed, wall mounted shower head making showering a bit of a hassle. The hotel is manageable for a one night stay but I would not stay for an extended period!
