Follow in the footsteps of the Mayas in one of their greatest cities. Appreciate their advanced culture in the remarkable sculptures and temples they left behind.

Lamanai is among the most fascinating Mayan legacies in the Americas with its myriad temples in an opening of the jungle. Parts of the structures, which date back thousands of years, are now partially covered in dense vegetation. Take a guided tour of the intriguing archeological treasures and the museum to learn about the legends and customs of the Mayas.

Visit the museum for an overview of the Mayas who once inhabited this part of the world. Inspect artifacts that belonged to their civilization and marvel at their ingenuity. Capture photos of the High Temple, which is a highlight of the site. Climb its many steps to the 108-foot (33-metre) summit for a superb view of the jungle and a lagoon belonging to the New River. See the Mask Temple, with its remarkable carvings of a toothy face amid bizarre patterns. Many Mayas were buried in these grounds.

Talk to your guide to learn about Mayan culture and its eradication at the hands of European colonialists. The site’s name comes from the Yucatec Mayan for “submerged crocodile,” in reference to the reptiles in the nearby river. The area was occupied as long ago as the 16th century B.C.

Visit the ancient city with a tour group. These companies generally compete on price. Go early in the day, so you have time to enjoy the complex. Purchase souvenirs and refreshments in the gift shop and other small shops.

Find Lamanai on the western bank of the New River. It is about 10 miles (16 kilometres) south of the Shipyard area in Orange Walk District, which will take about 40 minutes driving on dirt roads. Depending on the route, after picking you up from your hotel, tour operators often include a boat ride, from which you can see monkeys and crocodiles.
