Pocket Guide: Pogno Lake Orta Hotels

Lake Orta, just to the east of Lake Maggiore, might not be as well-known as its considerably larger neighbour, but it has a beauty and several sights that rival those of the other northern Italian lakes. Not only are there beautiful medieval villages to explore, but there’s also one of the most exquisite little lake islands in the whole region.

What to See in Lake Orta

Head to the eastern shore to Orta San Giulio, a medieval village of narrow cobbled lanes and pastel-coloured waterfront palaces. Stop for a coffee and take in the waterfront views at one of the charming cafes in Piazza Motta.

Facing Orta San Giulio is Isola San Giulio, a little island easily reached by boat. A white Romanesque tower rises from the Baroque Basilica di San Giulio, which also features frescoes from the 14th Century. The island is tiny but beautiful, and once you’ve explored its cobbled lanes, you can stop for a picnic on the water’s edge.

At the northern end of the lake is the ancient town of Omegna, whose porticoes are a sign of its Roman past. Stroll along the pedestrianised waterfront of the old town, or take a wander along the picturesque Nigoglia canal. Omegna is the one of the centres of Italy’s designer kitchenware industry, so it’s worth popping into the flagship store of stylish Alessi.

Just north of the lake is the Sacro Monte di San Francesco, a series of 21 chapels that wind their way through the woods and up the hills. Inside each chapel are large terracotta statues that re-create biblical stories, including the life of San Francesco, making them a place of pilgrimage.

Where to Stay in Lake Orta

Take in the breath-taking views of Lake Orta from your lakeside hotel. You could choose a hotel within just a few feet of a beach in one of Lake Orta’s smaller villages. Or you could stay in Orta San Giulio in a waterfront hotel or perhaps one that’s in the historic heart of the town.
