Pocket Guide: Sesto Calende Lake Maggiore Lombardy Shore Hotels

Once you cross Lake Maggiore from west to east, you leave the Piedmont region and enter Lombardy. All along the Lombardy Shore, there are attractive towns, while inland you can zigzag up the winding roads that lead to rugged national parks.

What to See on the Lombardy Shore

Follow the winding shore road – or hop on and off the train – to explore the towns and villages on the Lombardy shore. The town of Luino is the place to be on a Wednesday when it puts on one of Europe’s biggest weekly markets, selling everything from food and clothes to household goods.

Carry on south towards Laveno, where there’s a pretty waterfront and an old-fashioned cable car that takes you near the summit of Monte Sasso del Ferro. The views from the top alone are worth the journey.

One of the Lombardy shore’s most popular attractions is the monastic complex of Santa Caterina del Sasso. Dating from the 12th century, this hermitage is an extraordinary sight from the sea, as it appears to cling to the rock face. It’s tiny but beautiful, with an enchanting collection of frescoes and architecture ranging from the Romanesque to the Baroque.

Further south is Angera, whose Medieval fortress, Rocca Borromeo, is in a commanding hilltop position and can be seen for miles around. There are several museums inside, including an enchanting doll collection. While you’re in the area, you can while away a few lazy hours in tranquil towns such as Ranco and Ispra.

Where to Stay on the Lombardy Shore

Enjoy the views of Lake Maggiore and the surrounding mountains by choosing a romantic lakeside hotel with an outdoor pool. Other options include cosy bed and breakfasts as well as spa resorts with full facilities to go with panoramic vistas.

Exploring the Lombardy Shore

If you have time, you can make your leisurely way down Lake Maggiore on the regular ferry services that go from most of the shore towns. There’s also an efficient train service linking the towns, many of which you can easily reach from Milan.
