Pocket Guides: Independent Hotels in Lake Maggiore

Stay in an Independent Hotel in Lake Maggiore

The range of independent hotels in Lake Maggiore is as varied as the region itself. You’ll find a style to suit every taste – from traditional grand hotels along the waterfront of lakeside resorts to secluded B&Bs, villas and guesthouses deep in the northern Italian countryside. Lake Maggiore hotels are full of character and recall the leisurely days of the golden age of travel, but now come with modern comforts.

You could choose an independent hotel in Lake Maggiore that has an outdoor pool, spa and lakeside dining terrace. But there are other hotels with easy access to the many beaches in Lake Maggiore and nearby Lake Orta. Relax on a private balcony with views of the lake, or wander through colourful landscaped gardens filled with palm trees. There’s also a selection of cosy family-run bed and breakfasts in historic town centres of Verese and Ollegio Castello.

What to Do in Lake Maggiore

Stresa, Verbania and Baveno are all attractive lakeside resorts with wide waterfront promenades where it’s easy to while away the hours admiring the lake and mountain views. Relax at one of the beach clubs in the resorts, or head to the sandy beach in the small village of Feriolo. Explore the lush greenery and marshes of the neighbouring Fondo Toce nature reserve.

From Stresa you can hop on a ferry to the Borromean islands, two of which, Isola Bella and Isola Grande, have opulent villas with beautifully landscaped gardens that are open to the public. There’s also an enchanting doll museum in the villa in Isola Grande. Across the gulf from Stresa is Pallanza, which is home to the botanic gardens at Villa Taranto planted by a Scottish captain in the middle of the 20th century.

Find an independent hotel in Cannero Riviera or Cannobio, where you can give windsurfing and kite surfing a go. Across Lake Maggiore is the dramatic spectacle of the monastery of Santa Caterina del Sasso, which somehow manages to cling to the cliff face in defiance of gravity.
