We really enjoyed our stay here. There were 5 of us traveling, my husband and I and our 3 grown children in their 20’s. It was spacious, clean, well appointed, and very convenient to the train station. Our host was very nice and greeted us as we checked in, gave us a lot of great resources on things to do and ways to get around, even offered to set up a Japanese cooking class for us and provided a mobile WiFi! There were 2 bedrooms and one tatami mat room with a futon mat that my 20 year old son loved. One bedroom had a double bed and the other had two single beds. There was a lot of room to spread out and a nice kitchen and dining area. It is extremely close to Tofukuji station and the Tofukuji shrine and also the very well worth visiting Inari temple with thousands of arches and a great hike. If you like running or biking it is also right next to the trail on the Kamo river. You can get trains form Tofukuji station or it is a 15minute walk to Kyoto station and all of the trains and buses that stop there. The house is well equipped for basic cooking and there are several small supermarkets near by with some larger ones just up the road past the hospital. The accommodation is compact but not cramped. It is clean and very well maintained. The owner- Kazuya- was very easy to contact and helpful with what to do and see, and any questions we had. He also sent us some items that we had forgotten. Tara House is close to a railway station, one stop from Kyoto central station on the JR line and also on the Keihan line which transports you easily to major temples, shopping and eating districts. Getting around by train and even bus is simple. The house itself is quiet, clean and well kept, our host was available when needed. It was also easy to keep warm which was important as we had a few bitterly cold days,. Make sure you visit Tofukuji temple which is 10 minutes walk away and if you like Indian food and want a change from Japanese, try the restaurant Kathmandu about 5 mins walk from the house (near the station on the road to the temple). There are 24hrs convenient store near by and they have Takyubin service. We got them to deliver our luggage to Osaka. There are nice little cafe, sushi place and late night yakitori. We tried them all. The house is one station from Kyoto Station, so you can transition on JR (without having to purchase other tickets). It is on the edge of the main town and about a 10 min walk from the station. Other than getting to the Bamboo Forest and Monkey Park, you will need to purchase tickets each time you travel on the other train. The place was just as described, it is very homely, a great size (especially compared with what we had in Tokyo), the beds are super comfortable etc! Other than one in the small room which my 11 year old stayed in, the beds are western. One suggestion to the owner would be to buy a corkscrew, we bought a beautiful bottle of wine to have one night.. and finding somewhere that sells them was not as easy as it should seem. Everything else we needed, such as washing liquid, hair dryer etc was available. Our host was also fantastic, providing us with maps and a magazine on what was happening in Kyoto. Such great service! All in all, we loved this house and we adored Kyoto!! Walking to the nearby temple on our last morning was a bonus.
