The splendid French neoclassical home of the Archbishop of Trier and the Prussian Crown Prince now houses federal government offices within its sprawling estate.

Experience the grandeur of Koblenz’s Kurfürstliches Schloss, the Electoral Palace. Built in the late 18th century as a residence for the last archbishop and elector of Trier, the building was one of the final palaces to be built before the French Revolution. Admire this remarkable example of early French neoclassical architecture, which is recognized as part of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site and protected by the Hague Convention.

Explore the Schlossvorplatz (Palace Front Square) and appreciate the building’s architecture from different angles. Extending north and south, facing the Rhine River, the palace is comprised of an immense rectangular main building and two semi-circular wings. Face the building’s main façade on the western side to see its monumental portico, which has eight columns rising to the roof. Spot the relief sculptures that depict the allegory of the Rhine and the Moselle, as well as the electoral coat of arms, lions and ecclesiastical symbols related to the archbishop electors of Trier.

Commissioned in the 1770s by Clemens Wenceslaus of Saxony, the last archbishop elector of Trier, the palace’s design broke with tradition and gained acclaim for its impressive architecture. Notice that each room was designed with a focus on the Rhine, either drawing attention to the river views or referring to the landscape. The rooms on the south and east of the palace command beautiful views of the Middle Rhine Valley. In the 19th century, the palace was home to Wilhelm I, the Prussian crown prince, emperor and military governor.

Explore the riverfront Schlossgarten (terrace garden) to find a mirror-like pool and the Görres Monument along the Rhine Promenade. The interior of the castle is only accessible to the public via the Grand Café, which serves drinks and light meals throughout the day. Your visit might coincide with a festive banquet, conference or celebration held within the palace rooms.

Kurfürstliches Schloss is located between Koblenz’s Altstadt (Old Town) and the Rhine riverbank. Park at one of the adjoining garages or walk 15 minutes from the Koblenz City Center railway station. The palace gardens and café are free to visit.

Stayed at this hotel due to its close proximity to the Cologne Christmas Markets and because we required a triple room. The location of the hotel is convenient - close to tram stop and a few mins walking distance of the Christmas Market at Heumarkt. There is also a great Brauhaus just around the corner for German beer and food. However, the hotel is on a main road and the traffic was incredibly noisy - even after midnight you should expect to hear drunken shouting, sirens, fast cars driving past etc outside. Our room was also located opposite the elevator, so we could hear every guest on our floor using it and all of their conversations. On our second night a male guest was very loud returning from their night out and as they got off the elevator around 2am they purposefully banged on our door very loudly which was a little scary (I assume they were drunk). If choosing to stay here, keep your doors firmly locked and pack ear plugs if you want any sleep. In terms of cleanliness, it was quite a dusty room. The sink was very slow to drain water. There was also occasionally a “dirty pipe/sewage” smell in the bathroom - I imagine the sinks need some drain unblocker/cleaning products! Beds are quite hard and pillows are very lumpy. On a positive note, the staff we did encounter seemed friendly - check in and check out was quick and easy. Overall, we chose this hotel purely for location and convenience, but would not choose to stay here again.

Our second time here - it’s an old school great German spa hotel, with the exceptional sauna complex (which includes rituals every hour from 13.00). It’s dated at parts but that’s compensated with the very fair value. The breakfast was plenty, the service kind and welcoming and the room large and clean. We will come back.

The hotel is in a perfect part of town where there is plenty to do if you choose to hang around the area and central enough to walk to the more “happening” parts of town. The staff are great and will assist you and the rooms are equipped with a TV, kettle and strong Wi-Fi
