Situated in a unique and peaceful location on top of cliffs overlooking Start Bay, between Salcombe and Dartmouth. Purpose-supplied furnishings and contents for a prestige holiday let. Consistently furnished in a New England theme with high-quality products throughout. Awarded 4\* by Visit England, you are assured of a high quality, comfortable stay. Children and babies are welcome (high chair, cot and steam steriliser provided). Expansive views across the whole of Start Bay, from Start Point lighthouse to Mewstone Rock off Dartmouth, and probably the best wide view in Devon. Ideally situated between Salcombe and Dartmouth, with easy access to coastal walks, beaches, sailing, and surfing. There is a heated swimming pool (May-Sept only) and tennis court (all year). An ideal location for a family holiday or a romantic break for two, Five offers a comfortable relaxed living space, with high-quality entertainment systems (Sky HD, DAB radio, iPod dock, two flatscreen tv's, wifi), that ever-changing view, yet within easy reach of local pubs, restaurants, and a huge variety of outdoor activities. Beaches: There is a beach less than 2 minutes walk from the apartment, reached via a gently rising and falling path. The popular beaches of Lannacombe and the quieter but no less beautiful Mattescombe are less than five minutes by car, whilst Slapton Sands and Blackpool beach are less than fifteen minutes away, and there are dozens of other beaches, inlets and rias to explore nearby - Mill Bay as well as the usually more crowded North and South Sands beaches in Salcombe are recommended.This variety of locations allows you skim stones, build sandcastles, explore rock pools, swim either alone or with lifeguards around (in season), and you can usually find a sheltered location no matter what the wind direction. Walking: The South Coast coastal path runs directly outside Prospect House, making it an ideal base for walking the cliff-tops and seashore. A forty minute walk talks you to the Start Point lighthouse, whilst less time in the other direction takes you past North Hallsands beach and brings you to The Cricket Inn, a pub serving excellent food at Slapton Sands. There is also a children's park and playground for them to run off any more energy, and the best seafood shack in Devon, with bring-your-own drinks and fresh catch of the day. Local Towns: Salcombe and Dartmouth are the two main tourist towns nearby, both about 20 minutes by car, offering all amenities and activities. Kingsbride is the town closest by car, and there are numerous villages, most with highly agreeable pubs, spread over the area. Ornithology/bird-watching: as well as the sea birds soaring on the up draughts along the cliff edge, Slapton Ley, very nearby, offers some excellent brackish water wetland bird-watching. Horse-riding/mountain biking: as well as the local lanes, there is excellent riding on Dartmoor under an hour away. Fishing: sea fishing trips go from Dartmouth and Salcombe, with some good river fishing in a variety of waters from Dartmoor southwards. Astronomy: the coast offers some of the clearest skies in Britain, and, away from the flick of the lighthouse beam, there is no light pollution, so you get dramatic views of the stars and planets. Recommended Pubs: The Cricket Inn is the closest pub, easily reachable by car or via a picturesque walk along the coast (25 minutes of undulating cliff-top path with great views and wild flowers: a torch for the return journey is recommended if it's after dusk). It serves a wide range of predominantly seafood-based dishes, good beer, and has a friendly atmosphere and staff. The Pig's Nose, at East Prawle, is also close by, and is renowned for its friendly (and child-friendly) atmosphere, excellent events, and hearty food. As a family, we have been sailing and holidaying in this area for many years, enjoying the friendliness of the locals, the fresh air, sea and beaches. You can sit-by or lean on the rail and just take it in. The location is very quiet, so you most often just hear the waves below, birds and distant boats. Handfuls of friendly people pass below per-day and you know they're quite jealous.Inside is tasteful, with a well-equipped kitchenette, two showers, good TV set-up and wifi. Parking is no issue and the site has a warmish pool (it's just a pool mind, no messing, and shuts at 18:00) and a tennis court.Walks of 30-45mins can take you to the lighthouse (tho not often open to the public) or to Beesands and the pub and fish-bar. Reasonably steep but always with fantastic views.The area - it's ok, Hallsands, Torcross and Slapton have dramatic histories, Darmouth is pretty, Salcombe is… overrated. Plymouth is Bristol 20 years ago. It's all OK, especially if you like looking at other people's property investments or parked boats.The not-so-good - the soft-furnishing could do with a cleanup or renewal. We were bitten, relentlessly - though 'no pets', jumping insects as well as mosquitos were seen. Can't say why, as general cleanliness seemed fine - maybe somethings got blown in? Right on the coastal path. Peaceful, relaxing. If you like to pop out to the shops this is not for you - take food with you. Fantastic fish restaurant and takeaway at Bee Sands (15 min drive). The only downside when staying this time was a drains smell coming from the ensuite bathroom - it was quite disturbing for last two days when weather was very windy. Stunning views out to sea and coastline at front and lovely green hills at the back. You can open the french door in living room and sit in the sun, while soaking up the view. Perfect for walking. Enjoyed playing tennis again, and even had a dip in the pool. Kitchen pretty good for catering. I would probably not book during high season - there are sitting out balconies below and in front that belong to other flats - it could be a bit noisy if weather good. One thing to know - take toilet roll, soap, kitchen cloths, dishwasher tabs (if catering a lot - there were two tabs provided). No shops locally! The property host Russell was very prompt to reply to questions - the heated pool boiler had broken and he attended to this immediately - it eventually improved in temperature. Had a short family break here. The flat is in a great location with amazing views of the sea and lighthouse. The flat is a good size and had everything we could have needed. We had some fab walks to Start Point and Mattiscombe sands. A short drive to Dartmouth on a couple of days and Hope Cove. We even ventured further into Cornwall to the Eden project (1hr 40 from the house). Overall fantastic peaceful stay...highly recommended! The drive to the property is down some typical narrow country Devon lanes but if you take your time it's fine and the location is worth it. The house that the apartment is in is gorgeous. The apartment itself is very comfortable, light bright and airy. We experienced a strong wind while there but the apartment was well insulated so we could enjoy the sea waves from indoors. It's a great place for walkers as the coastal path is right on the doorstep. The history of Hallsands was well worth reading; interesting and moving. We got in contact with Russell (the owner) at the beginning and end of the holiday just to for information really and he replied very promptly. The nearby villages are all worth visiting. Great place to stay to explore the local area. Fabulous pub within walking distance (you'll need to book during busy period) and a great pool (not too cold! Even I went in!) and tennis court so you don't have to venture out by car if you choose not to. The decor is lovely and fixtures and fittings are of the highest quality. In particular, the showers are wonderful - beautifully clean and very powerful. The design of the whole development means that the apartment is lovely and warm. We barely needed the heating on at all. The views are amazing- this really feels like the most beautiful place in England to us. The light, the sea, the history, the lighthouse and the whole atmosphere makes us feel privileged to be here. It really is a wonderful, relaxing place. We find this a great place for walking, running, playing tennis, fishing and chilling out. We barely use our car- this is all part of the attraction. However if you want to use the car there are plenty of places within easy reach (if you don't mind the narrow Devon lanes)! How could the property be improved? Well, it would be great to have a bit more information about how things worked (manuals etc). We found the heating controls challenging (it said there was an instruction booklet, but we searched high and low and couldn't find it). We also had issues with the coffee machine and gave up in the end (again no instructions). The kitchen equipment is sufficient but we would have liked some short, tumbler style drinking glasses if we are being really picky. In summary, great location, wonderful apartment and everything in place for feeling like you are in an English paradise. Thank you! ##### Suzanne L.
