Built in the 1890s on the site of what had been a small provisions and butcher shop, this charming building has a rich and captivating history. In the 1930s, while Hemingway lived a few houses down, it was home to a popular Cuban bodega. From the 1980s through the turn of this century, potter Charles Pearson created ceramic masterpieces which are still collected today. If you keep a watchful eye, you will find some of his ceramic fish adorning buildings and homes in the neighborhood still. Its current guardians have spent nearly a decade painstakingly bringing the building back to life, with three one-bedroom apartments, and hosting Dog Tired Studio gallery up front as the proud face of the building. Julia Whitehead, the patron mermaid of the building, has been keeping an eye over this landmark since she first surfaced here in the 1800s, and she invites you to come and live like a local, just steps from Duval St., in the shadow of the lighthouse. Here, at charming Coral Cove, you’ll find an updated, modern space with colorful, beachy decor. The full kitchen makes it easy to whip up meals or snacks, and you can dine alfresco at the bistro table on your enclosed patio. Spend the day snorkeling at Dry Tortugas National Park, then let the AC splits in each room cool you down. Watch a bit of TV or use the free WiFi to scroll social media, then call it a night in the serene bedroom, with sweet dreams of mermaids and swaying palms in store. The cleaning crew had it sparkling. The management company was very attentive when I found I was missing my phone after checkout. Note: there was no dining table, so we had to sit on the sofa and use the little “coffee” tables. Perhaps they have remedied that per our review. There is no dishwasher, but there is a newly done kitchen, and there is no washer and dryer, but we found a laundromat up on Truman that washed, dried, and folded a load of laundry for 10\. However, a couple of things you should be aware of. 1\. The noise from the street and upstairs neighbors was very noticeable. 2\. The lack of an assigned parking spot was a problem. It was so hard to find a spot we just didn’t drive the entire time we were there. 3\. Even though this is listed as a one bedroom, the door to that bedroom is glass with no curtains. Be advised that you need an access code to enter the gate to the property that is different from the apartment code. You can’t get to your unit without it! ##### Mayra J. Stayed 2 nights in Feb 2025 ### 8/10 Good #### Andreas N. 23 Apr 2025 Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy #### Great location and nicely remodeled but unit is very small and had a musty smell The good:- This is a prime location, and the unit had pretty much everything we needed.- It is very nicely remodeled.- Bed was very comfortable.- Kitchen was well stocked.- Bathroom was very nice.The bad:- The unit had a musty/weird smell.- Even though we were there in April, where it is generally not too humid, nothing ever dried (Swimsuits, bath towels etc).- There are not enough towel bars.- It is small and there is no place to eat, except in front of the TV. ##### Andreas N. Came back later, an hour before check-in and still was told couldn’t check-in even though we went to property and looked like no activity. Office manager walked with us to place but couldn’t get in using our given code or one he said was an override. Finally maintenance manager came and said wrong code was given and we finally got in with new code he gave us - 30 minutes after check-in time. After this frustrating check-in, everything else with the stay was great. ##### Lawrence B. Near everything but far enough you don't get the noise. Clean and inviting. I would rebook in a heart beat!! The only thing I would add would be outdoor hooks to dry towels. ##### Andrea B.
